What's Happening In Your World
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) has announced that he is leaving the Senate for a payoff  at the conservative Heritage Foundation. For South Carolina conservatives, this raises the question of who will replace DeMint, since the Senator  has announced that he will begin his new job on January 1st. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, an Indian American, has a unique opportunity to appoint an African-American to the seat. Many see this as an opportunity to add diversity to a Party which desperately needs to reach out to minority voters. Republicans have lost the popular vote in five of the last six elections, and appointing an African-American Senator would be a first step in bridging that gap. So who’s up for consideration for the job? The frontrunner seems to be Congressman Tim Scott, who is a black Tea Party Congressman. Scott would face election in 2014, but he would have a year to get his foothold in the U.S. Senate. Scott is one of only a few black Republicans on the national stage, especially considering that Rep. Allen West was defeated in his bid for reelection, is and is now a lame duck. Unlike West, who was a regular on Fox News, Scott has kept a low profile. The buzz created by having an Indian-American  Republican governor appoint an African American Senator would definitely be perfect optics for the GOP. If appointed, Scott would be the just the fifth black Senator since Reconstruction.

Will South Carolina’s Governor Appoint Senate’s First African American Tea Party Republican?
