Two Gang Members Charged In Shooting Death of Hadiya Pendleton

Eighteen year old Michael Ward and 20 year old Kenneth Williams are charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery with a firearm in shooting death of Hadiya Pendleton and injuries of two others.

.

Just two days after Hadiya Pendleton was laid to rest, two reputed gang members have been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in the attack that killed the 15-year-old and left two other teens wounded in Harsh Park late last month, about a mile from President Barack Obama’s Kenwood home.

Michael Ward, 18, and Kenneth Williams, 20, mistook the group of teens that included Hadiya and the other shooting victims for rivals and sought to retaliate for a shooting that took place last summer. Nathaniel Pendleton, Hadiya’s father, said this is the first time he has had a “legitimate” smile on his face since losing his daughter to the senseless violence. “I’m ecstatic that they found the two guys,” he told the Chicago Tribune by phone from a Washington, D.C. restaurant, where he was with his wife, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, and other relatives. “(I’m) thanking God that these two guys are off the streets, so that this doesn’t happen to another innocent person.”

Shortly after First Lady Michelle Obama returned to Washington after attending Hadiya’s funeral on Saturday, President Obama announced that he’ll be in Chicago to discuss the rampant gun violence that has plagued the city since last year. Respected community leader and activist, Father Michael Pfleger posted a status on Facebook about the President’s forthcoming appearance. “Wow, what a great day…Wonderful Worship Service, Dr. Cornel West was challenging and prophetic as always. The Father (Nathaniel Pendelton and God Father Mr. Stewart of Hadiya joined us for service. While we were breaking bread afterwards we get a call that they are arresting the men involved with her Murder and then get a call that the President WILL COME TO CHICAGO FRIDAY TO ADDRESS THE VIOLENCE…God you are so AWESOME….I REALLY BELIEVE THAT THE HAND OF THE MIDNIGHT HOUR WE ARE IN IS GETTING READY TO MOVE TO MORNING!!!!!!”

How do you feel about the President’s forthcoming appearance in Chicago?

  1. This is really attention-grabbing, You’re a very skilled blogger.
I’ve joined your rss feed and look forward to in the hunt for extra of your
fantastic post. Additionally, I have shared your site in my social networks

  2. Fastidious respond in return of this matter with solid arguments and
    explaining all about that.

  3. As James Brown said; we are talking loud and saying nothing. Some phrases are true, although we must stop so much taking and start right now with bettering our race. We are so far behind, and it seems as if it is almost impossible to clean up our destruction.
But, we must continue crying to God, and be more braver about our business. The doors are open, opportunities are right before our very eyes; we only need to stand us as real men and women and be leaders, and not wimps. I pray that God heals our people, we are a dying breed and don’t even know it. We must stop listening to any and everyone that says our cities are being restored. It is one thing for a city to be restored, and it is an entirely different scenario for a people to be RESTORED. God bless all of us in this great endeavor we are facing.

  4. This is fantastic news. What a precious and sweet young lady she was cut down by two young punks. They both deserve to die and rot in hell! Her father is very brave I applaud his strength. If it were my daughter I am not sure that I could be so strong. I am also relieved to find out that the President will be making a visit & having his presence felt. Great news for the family and the Ciy of Chicago. Maybe now Dr. Boyce will get off his back…somewhat.
GOD IS GOOD…ALL THE TIME…AND ALL OF THE TIME…GOD IS GOOD.”

  5. we got mad at delores tucker when she complained about the bs the rappers had on tv 24/7.we got mad at bill cosby when he told you stop raising these idiots.but no you worried where his sex organ been like that woman was going to be on welfare instead listening what he was telling you about

  6. Thank God for Justice! Not ONLY for Hadiya and her family, BUT the thousands of lives lost through GUN VIOLENCE in our nation! A person SHOULD NOT have to wonder or worry minute by minute aand second by second whether it’s okay if their children can go out to play. I have prayed and prayed for the violence to end and I KNOW that the numbers for the homicide rate WILL BE DROPPING in 2013 in Chicago! Why? Because the God I serve ANSWERS PRAYERS and is the SAME God that freed the Isrealites, the slaves and is the SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER.

  7. It is such good news about these arrest—As black folk and families we need to band together to make sure our BABIES and YOUNG FOLK are NUTRTIONALLY SOUND,lack of certain nutrients can fog our thinking-clean up TOXINS from our neighborhood, the AIR we breathe is also weakening us–the Problems in our communities are sometimes about things we never consider—these young men probably lives on SWEETS,in the streets and No real love—(this is not to excuse their crime) LACK OF ANY NECESSITY FOR HUMAN GROWTH will stun and probably make some act like ANIMALS–YOUNG TEENS or Anyone else who cannot afford to have or put in the work of raising children with GOOD FOOD,LOVE,ATTENTION and MORALS should NOT BRING THEM IN THIS WORLD—-THIS is THE LESSON WE NEED TO TEACH—-CERTAIN RACES REMOVE the less fortunate ones from their homes as babies and put them in seemly better situations and MOVE ON!!! PEACE!!!!

    • Amen to your thoughts and the fact that what you put in you get out. The “new millenium” kids have been poisoned by all the chemically induced food brightly colored drinks, the fastest food known to man and McDonald’s moms raising them along with X boxes, well what’s in a brain of the sort? Looks like the creation of a violent mind. Praise to the parents who make sure their children are eating whole food and limiting choices of snacking. Maybe just maybe we all can help save a life by saving our own one at a time.

  8. I doubt that just because children comes from a single parent home..doesnt mean all of them are the ones out doing crimes..i have 5sons a single parent..mines not out there doing crimes..thank god for it..but its a shame how these children become murders..from the begining in them..i do believe a bad seed has been concieve..never know what type of child u got til later..alot of kids also that comes from good homes both parents and still doing the same..this is not a one way fact anymore

  9. I don’t believe anything that comes from the CPD-the pressure was on to arrest a black man. I promise you any one would do. WAIT FOR THE EVIDENCE-don’t be to quick to judge. This story wreaks. 2 weeks looking for suspects and yet, these guys confessed? No freakn way!! Black men have filled Cook County Jail @ the hands of CPD. Yet, we are celebrating the arrests of two more w/o eveidence?? I want whomever killed that young lady caught however, I would rather it be the person who did it and I’m sure her family would agree…

  10. It reads in Bible, that if a child curse his Parents, take him to the elders and let them stone him to death. I think these young boys shooting people is worst than cursing, what should be done with them? I propose that we should at least start cutting their shooting hand off as a start. I’m one of the elders in the community.

  11. We as Black people are going to have to grab the reigns of our destiny and clean up our communities by ourselves and not wait for anyone else to do it!

    http://www.lancescurv.com/the-presidents-visit-to-chicago-how-much-can-he-accomplish-if-we-dont-change-from-within/

  12. If these two are found guilty of the murder of this young girl, they should receive the death penalty, no matter what the NAACP, or any other pacifist group think. These two animals, are the reason why I staunchly support sterilization, abortion, the death penalty, and any other means to eradicate the slime off this planet. Not one damn dime, should be used to try to rehabilitate these filthy animals. They should also hunt down the parents who birthed these animals, and after torturing their asses, give them the death penalty too. Yes, I do hate these animals, just like I hate every damn person that regard us as niggers, and do violence to our people. I hate them as much as, or more than I do the KKK. Anyone, that calls me nigger, and want to do harm to me is my enemy, irregardless of the color of their skin.

  13. I understand that this story and the State of the Black Union command a visceral response in all of us. What would be the result if we decided to ACT instead of COMMENT? We all know someone with the condition(s) we so eloquently analyzed. Will the critique alone solve the problem? I think not. Our history tells us that thousands of us ACTED in the 60s and got the rules changed. 40 years later, we ACTED so that one man (President Barack Obama) could change our circumstances. I love my President, fought hard to get him elected both times and I am currently working to help implement his agenda. At this point, can the collective “we” try to help those (teen parents and others) who need and WANT guidance? Can we also, refer those who CANNOT accept our help (right now) to the proper authorities (proven educational programs, community-based social services, mental health agencies, and yes sometimes the police? Our inaction helps to breed the conditions that are cause for complaint. We are social people and will for the most point go along with our family and friends. If your circle is doing well, you will strive to do well. When folks cease to make good decisions for themselves and their children, they need an intervention and WE ARE THE INTERVENTION. We need to figure out how to present the beauty of our circles so its virtues will combat the ills of our community. For example, what would happen if every HBCU or other institution of Higher Education adopted a public school and the students had the chance to visit that college or university at least once a year? The kids in these districts would SEE an alternative to their lives and could strive for something different and more positive. Folks demand better, when they know better. The daughter of TD Jakes and a whole host of others are teenaged parents but that did not stop them from wanting and striving for the best for their children. Why? Because of the circle, that surrounds them. Everybody makes mistakes but it does not have to be your life’s narrative. Let us help our folks create a vision of their own so that jail, drugs and unwanted pregnancies cannot compete. When we criticize, without love, understanding and the offer of possibilities, people cannot hear us. They just shut down or yell back and the situation stays the same. Let us be the EXAMPLE of the change we want to see in our community. Let us believe we are powerful enough – along with the President to make a difference.
Remember: “Strong people don’t need Strong leaders – Ella Baker”
    Peace and Love!

    • StefaniZ,

This is one of the most profound comments I’ve read on these blogs about us for us in a long time. I say it all the time when we know better we do better it’s as simple as that. But until we start to focus on the solution we will remain stuck with the problems. Why our culture is the most divided God only knows, and I’m tired of hearing how the division first started back in slavery times, that was then, what’s the excuse now.

      Thank you for your post,

  14. Oops! I apologize, as I didn’t mean to post my response twice. If possible, administrator, please take down one of my post.

  15. It all goes back to the home and good parenting. If kids are taught respect, to love one another at an early age and given the attention they deserve we have a much better chance of raising productive citizens. Education is so important also.

    • Raising children in a single parent home is not the issue. How one raises a child is what counts. Just because a father elects not to be responsible for his children should not be the determining factor as to whether a parent is going to invest in that childs future and outcome.

  16. Peace. ..black males acting cowardly, maybe a high school dropout, from a single parent home , not God fearing. ….what kind of culture / way of life/ is that?…And then they / that person gets a tool of death in their hands. White males shooting up suburban and rural america, black / brown males shooting uup inner cities. Angry people is what I see it could be anyone of us who cannot handle ourselves . There’s no reset and redo !!! Peace be Still and with us all !!!

  17. I’m so sick of people feeling that they can speak for all black persons as to what blacks think and feel. Who made you all knowing Byron Lee? You and all other blacks who say that. That’s what you think. No one thinks that President Obama is the messiah/savior of the black people. But, what we do think and know is that he is the President of the United States and is serving a second term for the most part because of all those “BLACK” votes that he got and we, black people, should expect/demand things just as other groups because they gave him their “VOTE.” Period. If he was my brother, I would tell him the same thing while at Big Mama’s house sitting at the table eating Sunday dinner. That’s how politics work. And, no one is expecting him to be the President for black people but to be the President of all people and so he should respond in the same way that he would for any other group. Period. Because when the President/1st Lady gets involved that brings national/world-wide attention to the issue in which an issue would not get otherwise and helps to move things in the right direction. The culprits are now in custody. Aren’t they? And, in terms of attacking the problem in the black community or any community/situation, you have to attack the problem on all fronts with the political front being just one front. There has to be a full court press on the problem.

Lastly, to this nonsense that certain blacks i.e. Cornell West, Tavis Smiley, etc. are pushing issues with President Obama in a way that they haven’t with other presidency, that is not true because they and others have been pushing these same issues for a long time. However, the degree in which they are pushing the issues may be greater which is not a bad thing because of the following reason:
It’s all about timing and you have to know when the right time is to move on something. If not, you decrease you chances of being successful and getting what you want/need. Blacks have always engaged the presidency. How do you think Martin Luther King gain the ground that he did? He put black/poor people’s issues before Kennedy/Johnson which is one of the reasons for the successes that came out of the Civil Rights Movement and others spoke to the plight of blacks before him i.e. Frederick Douglas, Mary McLeod Bethune, etc. However, they had a good sense of timing and pushed/voiced what they could during the times in which they lived. Because of timing, Ms. Bethune and Mr. Douglas couldn’t address the things in which Martin Luther King could address when he came along but because of all that each of them did, is the reason that we enjoy certain liberties now, as every step big or large that you take gets you closer to the finish line and that’s the same thing happening with the Obama Presidency. It’s about timing and what better time to push harder/stronger black issues than when there’s a black president. Our caucasian brothers and sisters have enjoyed this type of access/advantage since the beginning of this country. So are blacks not worthy/good enough to enjoy the same access but I know. Some of us have been brainwashed to self-hate and think that black is bad even your own black skin. You know it started with, “Masa, I deserve to be beat….. However, I beg to differ because Lord knows there’s been enough blood, sweat, & tears that has been shaded to justify our place and position at the table and to be the recipients of all the good that this country has to offer i.e. wealth, good education, heath care, etc. just like our caucasian brothers and sisters. As my grandmother use to always say when she was accessing medical care for certain illnesses that she was dealing with before her passing in March 2011 at 84, “Yes, I’m going to use these services because poppa them (my great-grandfather & grandmother) paid for them.” And, that’s the gist of it and so you do everything to continue moving toward full and true equality because “Poppa them paid for it.”

  19. Please people lets get a grip; Chicago has killing and this is black on black crime, we have killings in all major cities that are black on black and senseless. do you expect the POTUS to go to each city and say what? The folks that are killing will not go and listen to him and what will his message do and how long will his presence there do good? The communites has to stand up and fight; you have to take back your neighborhood. Parents have to be parents and not friends, send your child to schoold and expect something from them. These thugs that are killing are have no RESPECT for their mothers or fathers or authority. GUESS what they have no understanding of stuggles and how we as a people have to become one in order to achieve! Change must start in your home first and then in the community and then city to state and finally the federal government.
I see someone said Jesse Jackson stated to have Homeland Security bring in Marshalls? Really read the Constitution it is not allowed! States govern themselves your state can ask for the State Nation Guard to patrol like we did in New Orleans. Reading is fundmental but to understand and apply it takes work.

  20. I agree with Elizabeth! With the exception of a few, how a child grows up and looks at life begins in the home. We have too many teen moms and dads that are too stupid and uneducated to raise children in the way they should go. Until we as a race teach our children that having a baby just because some thug tells you he loves you/or some “hot mama” tells you she wants to have your baby and she is 2 years short of being in diapers herself, there will be no change. This is not our President’s job! When children see mom & dad working every day, they grow up working and not standing on the street corner with their pants hanging down to their knees dealing drugs. Too many single moms are enjoying the money that their children bring in off the streets, too many young fathers are teaching their young boys it is ok to deal on the streets, after all, that is what they are doing; how can our youngs folks change, when they have trash for parents???? We as Black people cannot continue to place everything on racism, it has gotten old and I for one am sick of hearing it. We are our own worst enemy, we destroy each other there is no need for the White man to do it, he just sats back and watches. Yes racism is alive and well but it not the White man killing us, we are killing each other. I am sick of hearing about all the Black males in jail/prison, they got caught with the drugs, killing their brothers, robbing each other, what the hell do you expect. We do these things to ourselves, you get no sympathy from me!

  21. Black on black crime has nothing to do with racism!!!!!! Sick of us not taking our own responsibility. What white man prevented those gang members from getting a “free” education? What white man forced them to pick up a gun? Get serious. One black person kills another in the hood because of the racism coming from the white suburbs or from 500 years ago????? BS!!!!!

  22. Some of you black people are living in la-la land. How is a president, black or white is going to stop violence in this violent world?! I guess since he’s coming to the city of Chicago, thugs are going to stockpile ALL their guns in a neat big pile for them to be taken away. Give me a break! Some of you think President Obama will be arriving with Moses, Abraham, and the man himself, Jesus. If that was the case, then something will definitely change. Now back to reality, NOTHING WILL CHANGE!

    Goosebumps.

  23. What took him so long, the killing has been going on since last summer.

    • The President has been busy trying to run this country while fighting opposition from all sides. I blame African-Americans for the state they are in and not the President. This is what happens when you embrace teen pregnancy, no fathers in the homes, thug/jail life and shunning education. These are issues you have to address in your OWN home, not the oval office.

      • what you say is correct elizabeth to a degree, but, you can not ask blacks to take responsibility for the totality of conditions when there is a clear legalized genocide underway as well.Pleas go back and research the way structured racism has been legally put in place and operates under the title”justice”with the whole intent and purpose of placeing blacks right back in the same condition they were in pre-civil rights act era.The sad fact is:not only has it worked, but many blacks have helped to carry it out and continue.

    • I understand we want President Obama to be everywhere adn just save the black people. I am African American but the truth is we must stand up and be responsible. It should not take him going to Chicago for folks to stop senseless killings. It will take more than the Presidents appearance to reclaim the streets, family and our children. The village syndrome has been dropped and now we have a loose cannon on our hand and God is the only one that can save us from the rampage of ignorance.

  24. Praise God for everyone who stands up for saving our children against guns and gun violence; including our President! If we are not a part of the solution than we are part of the problem!

  25. President Obama visiting Chicago isn’t going to change a single thing. Cleansing comes from within. It’s very peculiar that the same folk who rant and rave about the violence in Chicago don’t seen anything wrong with Dorner mowing down innocent people- people who had absolutely nothing to do with his feelings of injustice. He’s blaming the LAPD for not taking responsibilty for the inequities in their organization, but he does exactly the same thing in ot handling his own shortcomings in a responsible manner. You people who support him are as evil as Charles Manson. Your ability to reason is no better than that of a toddler. Maybe someone elso who feels grossly msitreated by the system will open fire on your or your son or daughter or mother. I guess you’ll think it was completely warranted. God help your eerie souls.

  26. Today, Feb 12th the the founding of NAACP in Springfield, IL. I am very happy the people responsible for killing Hadiya Pendleton have been caught. More young lives destroyed…

Can we now move forward and STOP more black on black crime?
President Obama, THANK YOU for coming home to Chicago.

Hopefully, your message will get through and gun violence will begin going down. Thank you for caring and doing the right thing. Happy Black History Month!

  27. Now that the ball is rolling, lets start working on solving all of the other murders that have happened and getting those monsters off the streets too. If they can find and arrest the perpetrators so quickly this time, what has been holding them back in the past?

    • Netta,

Amen to that, they can find whomever they want when they want. My only brother was murdered and to date no one held accountable. He wasn’t a thug, wasn’t a hoodrat with a ni–er mentality but yet senseless unexplained bullets flying same as that young lady and we grieve everyday still. I know there are countless other families who can share and identify with my story. It seems to me more times than not as soon as it’s even heard of a black man being killed by guns the assumption is they were doing something or in the wrong place at the wrong time and get lumped in a group and eventually a cold case…

  28. “Let them lose thier souls they are animals anyway” From the Godfather.

  29. I hate that it took a whitehouse.gov petition and the death of a 15 yo child for the president to finally pay some attention to blacks, but at least he is going. This should be a lesson to you. If you just blindly hand out your vote and don’t demand attention you won’t get it.

  30. The civil rights movement has spoiled us as a people. We donot want to fight for ourselves in our own communities we wait on others.
We can start the actvism ourselves in our communities. Encouraged each other instead of turning on each other.

  31. IF THEY DID THIS I HOPE THEY BURN THEIR BLACK AZZ I’M SICK OF SO MUCH KILLING OF BLACKS FOR NO REASON

  32. This is a first step in the right direction. I commend the president for this yet much more needs to be done.
Now the residents of Chicago need to raise their children with dignity and pride.

  33. My question is, is Obama failing black people, or are black people failing themselves. These two young men were cultivated in a black home, in a black community. Prabably High School dropouts, from a single parent home. Black people complain about the prison system, yet many are happy to see these two go to prison forever. Several complain that Obama is not pardening anyone. Obama can’t fix ignorance and anger. How does one man save a people from themselves. For the first time in history, the black community is afraid of their children.

  34. What have we Blacks done to reduce such killings our communities? It seems nothing. We have had very successful Black people in our communities. But once these get big Affirmative Action jobs, the do nothing jobs, they flee our communities and live with rich people. Well, we who have been left behind have to do something now. These killings have to stop. I agree with Jesse Jackson that Homeland Secretary to send Marshalls to patrol these neighborhoods. In fact I have started a campaign that President Obama appoints Jesse to the position. I believe Jesse will bring senses to our youths in these neighborhoods.

  35. Mr. Pendleton, please leave God out of this. This is what Mr. ObAMA, SHOULD HEVE BEEN DOING SINCE HE WAS ELECTED.i HAVE WRITTEN EMAIL, AFTER EMAIL ABOUT HIM NOT DOING THE SIMPLE THING LIKE SPEAKING TO THE BLACK YOUTH OF aMERICA, cHICAGO IN PARTICULAR.
I AM A SUPPORTER OF THE PRESIDENT, BUT WHEN IT COME TO HIS PERFORMANCE AS A LEADER iI WOULD SAY HE IS FAILING US.i WILL NONTINUE TO DOG HIM UNTIL HE DO THE RIGHT THIK. AND STOP KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE.
aMERICA FOREIGN POLICY IS WRONG IN THE MIDDLE EAST, IT IS WRONG IN AFRICA, AND IT MUST CHANGE.
wWE CANNOT HAVE EUROPEANS AND AMERICANS DROPPING BOMBS ON AFRICAN FOR THEIR RESOURCES.
I HAVE BEEN HAVING BATTLE WITH THESE PEOPLE IN WASHINGTON SINCE THE 1980S.DURING THE HIV/AIDS CRISES.WHEN BILL CLINTON, ANF THE PHARMACUITICAL COMPANIES FILED LAW SUIT TO PREVENT THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT FROM PRODUING AIDS MEDICATION TO TREAT THE PEOPLE OF AFRICA.
I CLASH WITH NANCY PILOSI, IN SAN SANFRANCISCO, AT A FUNCTION OVER THAT ISSUE.NOW I AM CLASHING WITH THE PRESIDENT OVER BOOTS ON THE GROUND INAFRICA, AND HIS SUPPORT OF FRANCE AND ENGLAND KILLING AFRICAN WITH HIS SUPORT FOR THEIR RESOURCES. WE AS BLACKS ARE NPOT BENEFITTING FROM THOSE RESOURCES, NEITHER ARE THE AFRICAN PEOPLE SOWHY SHOULD THE EUROPEANS GET IT AS WELL AS WHITE AMERICAN CORPORATION?.

  36. I hope these are the young men who are responsible for the shooting, because according to the Chicago Police, one of the two young men, confessed to pulling the trigger. I also pray that the Nation will not be satisfied to have just arrests and possible convictions. The Nation is full of Kenneth’s and Micheal’s and there is a pathology at the root of the reasons these things happen. What these young men did are just the symptoms of a real problem. Maybe this is something the challenging and prophetic Dr. Cornell West and Tavis Smiley the wealth builder, can do for the Nation.

  37. Cheryl Johnson-Ragland! I agre with you as a mature Black Man! As My Big Momma would say. "Tjhe Lord don't like nothing but the truth." In my 65 year young life I came to realize that 95% of Black People in relationships with whites are treated better and more respectful than they are by other blacks! I found this to be especially true of Black Women involved with whites! The primary reason for this is because most white people see us as the stronger race and they like to be dominated!

  38. CHERYL LYONS-JOHNSON! I couldn't agree more! It is a damn shame that all too many balcks are his arch opponents! These are the ones with the SLAVE MENTALITY as I heard one of them say, " We aren't ready for a Black President anyway." I had to tell this ignorant ass when he said WE he was either speaking french and/or had a turd in his pocket!

  39. KENDALL! I do pray for their famiuly members who are decent! However; I say to and about them,"BURN BABY BURN." AND more POWER TO THEIR WORTHLESS ASSES!

  40. TIFFANIE SMITH! Do you and others like you reallyexpect/advocate President put priority over this amnd not the afAIRS OF THE STATE? wE AS bLACK pEOPLE SHOULD BE DOING OUR PART! tHIS TYPE OF SHIT WAS HAPPENING WHEN WHITE PRESIDENTS WERE IN OFFICE! wHERE WERE YOU ALL THEN? I NEVER OBSERVED THIS TYPE OF OUTCRY WITH AND FOR ANY OF THEM!
