Texas School District First to Allow Teachers to Tote Guns

Harrold Independent School District in Texas will be the first to allow teachers to tote guns in class

.

Texas is a state that is never shy of giving the rest of the nation a “shock appeal.” They have the fastest speed limit in the nation (85 mph), they spearheaded the petition to secede from the nation following President Obama’s re-election, and now they will have the first school district with gun-toting teachers.

Last October, trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change to allow employees to carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, as long as the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements. Texas law outlaws firearms on school campuses “unless pursuant to the written regulations or written authorization of the institution.”

Superintendent David Thweatt said the policy was initiated because of safety concerns. “We have had employees assaulted before by people in the last several years,” Thweatt said. “I think that safety is big concern. We are seeing a lot of anger in society.” He didn’t comment on the nature of the assaults, but attributes gun-free zones to the surge of school shootings in recent years. “When you make schools gun-free zones, it’s like inviting people to come in and take advantage,” Thweatt said. Thweatt says the community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff’s office, which leaves students and teachers without protection. He believes his district could be a target for a school shooting because its campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287.

In order to tote a weapon, teachers and staff  must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations; and must use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

The K-12 school district is home to 110 students.

How do you feel about teachers and staff toting guns to school?

  1. Shirley,

What a great idea!!! But with the Obama administration and the progressive and atheist movements push to eradicate all things religious from the public square, it will never happen – at least for the next four years.

Either the American people are blind to the “changing winds” and the war on religion and faith in this country or they have chosen to overlook this very important phenomenon at the expense of the morals and values for current and future generations of children.

It seems that any profane or pornographic activity is perfectly fine, but there is outrage at the sight of a nativity scene that has been displayed for over a hundred years or prayer before a sporting event but they cheer as the teams beat the crap out of each other and, occasionally, a player even dies in one of these “gladiator battles.”

We profess to be a nation of God but is becoming increasingly secular and salacious with legal non-medicinal drug use in several states, the almost maniacal push to legalize gay marriage and expand gay rights, the demonization of traditional marriage, religion and people of faith, and the encroachment of our national sovereignty and borders by illegal immigrants and their surrogates with seemingly no respect for American laws and values.

I have said it time and time again that we are on the precarious slippery slope and the people we look to for national, spiritual and moral leadership are actual “change agents” for our transformation into a perfidious nation with the individual pursuit of hedonism as our “Godly purpose.”

There is nothing remotely Godly about that and if we continue down this path of a diminishing collective moral conscience with adults acting more entitled and immature than their juvenile charges, we can expect more chaos and mayhem not only in our schools, but all across the spectrum.

We have abandoned our moral compass. We know better but we want to be “progressive” not anachronistic or antiquated. After all, anything old and traditional cannot possibly be of value in a culture that craves constant relevancy and re-definition.

But, some things span time and remain culturally relevant and valuable. It is best we learn this lesson before it is too late.

How about leaving guns out of schools and putting prayer back in!!

  4. I hope the children are safe and protected. The teachers maybe careless with concealing them and we loose a child that way. win and loose situation about it.

  5. Well people, I'm not a gun advocate, but this is the reality. People kill people,,,,with guns and other less dramatic means. Every area of the country is not as civilized as you
may think. A teacher with a gun ,no, but someone highly
trained may need to be present and equipped with a firearm,,,,,

  6. Not sure how I feel about this.

  7. Yep, that is definitely the solution! More & more guns. Why stop at arming the teachers? Why not arm all the children, the janitors, the cafeteria workers, the social workers etc.? Everbody should b packin. That way if someone looks at u the wrong way, steps on ur toe accidentally, moves ahead of u n line at the supermarket, cuts u off n traffic etc., u can jes take out ur glott & smoke em. Civilization or barbarism?

  8. I believe that security issues should handled by professionals trained maintain peace. Teachers should focus on properly educating our children.

  9. Brent I hope your life doesn't end by someone using your own guns to murder you. That boy's mother probably shared some your views which is why she not here today.

  10. People who can think straight see the brilliance of having teachers carry guns in school. Had just one teacher had a gun in Newtown, she would have killed the killer before he killed her and all those kids. Read the statistics — in Israel, where they are surrounded by people wanting to kill them, teachers carry guns and there are no killings in schools. If citizens there didn’t carry guns, there would be more violence than there is. And without citizens having guns, the government with guns can take over totally, as we saw Hitler and Stalin do as they killed millions of people who could’nt defend themselves.

  13. Are you kidding me? Ok I think I am done reading for the day. You really want to expose children to this in the school system. This has no place in an environment which should foster learning and food for thought not breeding for more violence & potentially at the hand of teachers. et to Brute!

  14. I am a former marine and a teacher. If I can defend my country with a weapon, then I should be able to de
fend innocent children in within my classroom. NUFF SAID!

    • Until we can control who can have these military styled automatic weapons, even G.I. Joe/Melvin Tolson could not protect a room full of children and himself from an attack of this nature. This has to be dealt with on many fronts with many actions to get a sensible solution, but you in the classroom strapped down with an assault weapon is not one of them. Except in the movies!

  16. Yes, more guns .. Carried by the right people. People who fear guns will never see this. They would just as soon disarm our military and pray that no one will bother us.

While I support the right to keep and bear arms within one’s domain and in general public places, there are two places were they do NOT belong:(1)Schools and (2)Churches. Places of education and spirituality are places of serenity where guns are NOT needed. Guns clearly the disturb the fabric of peace and schools and churches are SACRED GROUNDS. Gov. Rick Snyder in my home state of Michigan got it right to veto legislation allowing guns in those places. Let’s have sensible policy on this issue and not be renegades like the state Texas, which is used to being just that.

  18. Sharon King Stinson

This is nonsense, teachers with guns in a school, is best argument for Texas' secession, Please do! GO

  19. Oh yea…this is gonna end well. Underpaid, frustrated, and stressed professionals that already function as instructors, mentors, counselors, paralegals, and nurses are additionally pushed to be armed security? smh Way to go tending to those symptoms instead of helping stem the problem…

  20. I was a classroom teacher in the South Bronx who was once held captive in my classroom by a disgruntled student who was upset because I confiscated his hat. I know firsthand the angst and concern many teachers feel when entering a building where it seems students have more rights than they do. In spite of all of that, I do not believe teachers should be allowed to tote guns. That's why there are public safety officers in the building. So now we go to pushing aside trained individuals whose purpose is to protect and serve and now arm teachers whose purpose is to educate, mother, father, entertain, counsel and now police? Next we will see proposals to arm everyone from the postman, taxi drivers and retail store workers. I firmly believe every child starting in kindergarten until college should receive mandatory counseling. There's money for everything else, except for preventive measures. Being a reactionary America must stop!

  21. I think it would be better to hire more armed security personnel rather than arming the teachers themselves. The teachers already have enough on their plate. I have suggested that teachers get martial arts training to deal with unruly students—-self defense only, of course—with no success. Naw, lets ARM them and not let them have a skill set they can go to before things escalate to using the gun.

  22. Just another reason for me to be ashamed to admit I reside in Texas. Gov. Perry is the biggest fool there is and if he thinks this will deter a deranged person set on causing destruction he is more foolish than I thought. All this will do is give some twisted cowboy or cowgirl reason to harm someone believing they can get away with it. SMDH!

    • Robert N Delann Williams

Governor Perry is a moron. I left a message telling him how stupid that was and also I guaranteed him that if anything was to happen to my son in regards to teachers carrying weapons I would personally sue him and the State of Texas. He is a complete imbecile who is definitely THE WEAKEST LINK… I can't wait until his term is over.

  23. How about a compromise: Schools have a designated guard which would send a message that violence will be challenged. Also, if the guard is hit then that gives a warning. Two, the principal or one other designee is allowed to pack. It's clear that certain levels of mental illness are able to plan and therefore pick unprotected places. The second person is a backup, hopefully to lessen the carnage. There are a lot of automatic weapons around with the same ammo. We can't stop everything. Perhaps we can lessen the occurrence or cut down on the magnitude. And yes, legislate and work on changing all the factors that play into creating these scenarios.

    • More than one guard. A minimum of two to four guards per school.

    • You know, there is always a police car in front of each of the 2 high schools in Burbank, CA. They've been there for at least 20 years. When I think about our small towns here in Connecticut (we're the same size as Newtown and only 25 minutes away) and I see our police officers having very little to do except direct traffic at construction sites, I wonder if THAT isn't part of the solution.

  24. It took a depraved individual to think up something as sinister as this. I hope parents there, are prepared to give their state a "shock appeal" by defending their children.

  25. I agree! I think Texas has a right solution. It makes perfect sense to me. I say fight fire with fire. The restrictive laws on the coasts are what exacerbates these "so-called" random acts of violence.

  26. El'Malik Abdul Muhammed

Way to go good ole Texas as I know ya'll do everything BIG including this great Big stupid idea! Guns are a very serious issue with people so help solve the problem by allowing otherd to carry more guns, idiots….smdh!

  27. Robert N Delann Williams

I think it is the most ridiculous thing ever. What happens when you have a teacher and student confrontation will the teacher pull out his/her handgun and shoot the student. I don't want my child around any guns if he is not around it in my home he will not be around it in school. Hire a vet, give him/her a full mental evaluation and allow him/her to patrol the school but to have a teacher do such a thing is stupid. Does the ticket holder at the movie theater should they also carry a gun considering the Aurora shooting?

  28. So let me get this straight…gun violence is an issue…so the solution is….MORE guns? Really? So I guess rather than heal a cut on my arm or even put a bandage on it, I should just cut my other arm to get my mind off of it? Has to be a better answer than to have teachers packing! That's not what they signed up for.

    • in Texas you can shoot the repo man

    • the constitution must be upheld. do you really want the federal government to attempt to disarm the people when it is taking our rights over by one of obama's many executive orders? not me. an ar 50 saved my families life. i am here to post this. the guy breaking in with a gun is dead. you figure it out.

    • Brent – I will never downplay the importance of keeping your family safe. I'm glad that you were able to protect your family. However, the question here regards teachers packing heat in the classroom. An AR 50 is a big @$$ gun to pull on someone…but does EVERYONE need to own an AR 50 to uphold that ONE part of the constitution? You may be trained to use such a high powered (big bored) gun, and you clearly have a sense of when to use it. However, that's only you. When governing a nation, the leaders have to find ways to "split the difference" between the capable and the incapable. So to NOT budge on either side of the issue is not going to solve anything. No restrictions, no enforcements, more readily available high powered assault weapons, teachers pulling guns in classrooms…..I'm sorry but am I the only one who sees a problem with this line of thought? Something like this is a sure-fire way to make a bad situation worse!!

    • It wouldn't surprise me if the Gov. of Texas right now voting on kids carrying guns to school.

  29. So there are no teachers capable of mental illness at any time?

  30. Unbelievable, this will be fine until one of the teachers experience a period of insanity and kill some their students. Then we'll be looking for more answers. We have to stop ignoring the fact that gun are a danger to mankind regardless of whose hands it might be in. Our society is sick and needs to heal quickly.

  31. Bravo!
