What's Happening In Your World
On Dec. 30 the “Today Show” reported the story about San Francisco high school senior Courtni Webb. Webb, 17, is facing “possible expulsion” for writing a poem about the Newton, Conn., Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Courtni wasn’t trying to be dark and depressed in her poem, but she didn’t write memorials to the victims either. Instead, Courtni wrote a poem about Adam Lanza and what she saw regarding his drive to a mass murder in a children’s classroom. She didn’t write about flowers and rainbows. She wrote, “They want to hold me back……I understand the killings in Connecticut. I know why he pulled the trigger…. society won’t take the blame. We’re full of a society of haters and blamers” What some might see as a child’s way of speaking out and dealing with such a tragedy, others are seeing as part of a zero tolerance approach to violence within Courtni Webb’s San Francisco high school. Webb didn’t turn the poem in as her assignment; it was something she had written for herself. However, the teacher discovered it in her personal notebook and turned it over to the principal. Webb’s mother thinks the school district is overreacting. For now, she is suspended until further notice. Courtni, who writes “all types” of poetry to express herself, told “Today” that she was just trying to express “her belief that tragedies in Sandy Hook happen because people feel helpless.” Check out the video below of Courtni reading her poem. San Francisco Student Faces Expulsion After Writing Poem About Newtown Shooting [VIDEO]

Creative expression is one of the most powerful ideas in our world.  But sometimes, such expression can take us to dangerous places and cause us to be rejected by those around us.  A teenage girl who wrote what was in her heart is now being punished by her school after she refused to write the kind of Sandy Hook poem that her teachers wanted.  She wrote something that her teachers defined to be too dark to be acceptable.  As a result, the girl might be expelled.

While we may not agree with what Courtni Webb wrote, we have to wonder if we want to live in a world where a child can lose their right to an education because of what they think and write.  She didn’t do anything wrong, so maybe this decision is one that the school should reconsider.  This is not the first time that freedom of speech has been in jeopardy during a time of national crisis.  Shortly after September 11, residents were being sent to jail for things they said or wrote, even if they didn’t actually say them.  Neighbors were turning on one another, and most would agree in hindsight that this was one time period when our nation failed the test of liberty.   Freedoms are easy to preserve when everyone feels safe and comfortable. The greatest test comes when we feel unsafe.

  4. Here is an extract from the poem:

They want to hold me back.
I run but still they still attack.
My innocence, I won’t get back.
    I used to smile.
They took my kindness for weakness.
The silence the world will never get.
I understand the killing in Connecticut.
I know why he pulled the trigger.
    The government is a shame.
Society never wants to take the blame.
Society puts these thoughts in our head.
    Misery loves company.
If I can’t be loved no one can.

  5. She does NOT KNOW WHY he KILLED. I would get her some counseling SOON.

    • She has already helped herself.Poetry is a form of release and is very good therapy. I say that if her words evoked all this response and from what I’ve read, she’s very talented. I hope she pursues writing. Have you ever read Maya’s “I know why the caged bird sings”? That’s what this poem reminds me of. Do you think she needed help?

  8. The killings of those innocent children in Newtown, Ct brought all races, genders, ages, and cultures to gut-wrenching tears. But in the midst of the sorrowful pain and grief, some sought to educate Americans about the need for stiffer gun-control laws. Others sought to educate their children, as best as they could, about why bad things happen to good people and why we should honor human life, every one's life. This young lady, seemed to search for a way to educate the world about what makes too many of us uncomfortable and unable to face — "When society does not place the same value on the life of 'every' child, we all pay a heavy price." So instead of stripping this 'child' of her right to attend school, educators should have jumped at the opportunity for this priceless 'teachable' moment. There is much to be learned.

    • I clicked on the link and it took me to the video of her reading the poem. I also read messages that some adults wrote about this young lady that concerns me."Why should they have innocence when ours is gone?" Is she talking about society/government? I don't think that she is talking about the deceased children/adults. She is merely expressing her feelings of how the shooter may have been oppressed. Do we really know? This may sound sick and uncaring, but listen to her read the poem, then stop and listen again. She sounds like she has lived a life of oppression and hopelessness. She needs to talk to someone and be heard. Why suspend her from school? Help her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is giving us a message here. Lord knows we all feel bad about the shootings, and she does too, I believe. We have to stop and listen to our children. This is why I write about the bully child so much. No one cares to stop and listen to this particular child. We need to help the bully child, too. He was once an innocent sweet child like the others.

  9. Once again she is being labeled. If this was a white girl they would have called her poem ‘deep’ and ‘heartfelt’. She looked at the situation from the other side, we might find solutions from her view. And Frank she didn’t say anything racist so I don’t get your point

  10. There is not a damn thing wrong with what she wrote. People and not just the teachers, are mad because it was a bunch of white kids who died at one time and it was again a white male who did it..all these type of crimes are always done by white men. Why don’t society and police profile white males? You don’t have a problem profiling black males, why do you have a problem profiling white males? Only the white teachers have a problem with her poem. So what, they died get over it and changing the gun laws WiLL NOT CHANGE NOTHING!!! President Obama is not at fault, make a law for white parents to raise there kids better and that is how these type of situations will stop

  11. Blacks still need to learn to homeschool their children.

    • That's a great thought, but those who wish to limit our progress in America, would only use it as a reason to further disrespect/degrade our accomplishments. They would call mass homeschooling of our children, substandard, and refuse to accept our education, no matter how well we administer it. They don't even want to admit that we are meeting, and often times exceeding the standards that they set for themselves. What we as Blacks need to do, is to rally around each other, and support each other with all that we possess. During the sixties, Blacks supported Black progress, with time and money. Black Athletes, actors, doctors, lawyers, Oprah, and Blacks at the middleclass level must all say to those seeking to halt our progress, must stand up and refuse to play in that college/NFLgame, or act in that movie, or appear at that GOP/Democrat convention, until our children are treated with the respect that every child in America deserves. I understand that many of us are afraid to speak up, because we are afraid of losing that gig, but sometimes you(general usage) just have to take/make a stand for that which is right! I know we have bills to pay, but speak up and out as often as necessary, to stop this hatred and abuse that our children suffer at every turn in their young American lives.

  12. Expulsion means there is an unwritten rule that you are free until you cause us to rethink what we are used to thinking. Its one thing to openly offend someone but to offer another take on what is assumed, means it is a time to dig deeper and reevaluate ourselves. They kicked Bishop Carlton Pearson out of his church/college position for what he felt was God speaking to him that there was no a literal hell. Instead of rethinking hell with other theologians and Bible scholars? Just "see ya!" Fear that if we are "broken" then we will be lost. Instead of taking our brokeness and feeding 5 thousand; like the Word did. Amen.

  13. I would like to read the whole poem she wrote.

  14. What wrong with telling the truth in this society?. We could use some truth, the truth is the best PROPONGADA, but since we cannot stand the truth, we face danger when we dare. She tell us how many of us really feel about each, but that is uncaaeptable, because we are so used to being lied to that when the truth come at us, we reject it, and hate the person telling the truth.

  15. I like wouldi think we have freedon of speech, but we can't have it both ways. If this were a white girl writting something about race, we would be up in arms aking for punishment. What she wrote was probably in bad taste, but when do we start teaching and stop punishing.

  16. Unfortunately, America is sowing the seeds of its own destruction. I hurt for the victims of Sandy Hook but I also hurt for the thousands of innocent minorities who have met the same fate at no fault of their own. Shouldn't the nation be concerned about them, too.

  17. William H Leonard

I would like to see all of what was written in the poem and in the content that it was written.

  18. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ALL OF WHAT WAS WRITTEN…SO FAR IT IS TRUTH!

  19. What happened to free speech? Athougth I have not read EVERYTHING she said in her poem, she most likey is expressing something that a lot of people agree and respect her for. Sounds like a leader in the making to me.

    • Matthew 21:16 "Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him. "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read, "'From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise'?"

  20. [They want to hold me back……I understand the killings in Connecticut. I know why he pulled the trigger…. society won’t take the blame. We’re full of a society of haters and blamers”] Where is the rest of what she wrote? Is this all of it?

  21. Her parents need to take this Young Woman out of the school system. Black/ African people are asked to feel pain of Whites as if this is our main duty on this Earth. That and working our selves to death. 150 years since what?

  22. the girl is right. And punishing her for speaking the truth as she sees it will only guarantee that more voilence happens.
