What's Happening In Your World
President Obama held a press conference on Wednesday where he outlined what steps he would be taking to address gun violence in America. Obama said he would be charging Vice President Joe Biden with leading a team to develop “concrete proposals” to end killings like the massacre which took the lives of twenty children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Obama said the team will have a plan to curb gun violence no later than January, and he will push the legislation “without delay.” The president spent much of the time encouraging Congress to vote on whatever legislation he presents once it is ready. Obama also said that this country has a gun culture, and individuals have a right to bear arms, but  ‘‘we have a deep obligation — all of us — to try” to prevent killings like the one at Sandy Hook. The team led by Biden will include people inside as well as outside the White House. President Obama dismissed the idea that his plan is just another commission designed to punt on the gun issue. He said his team will not be a commission, but a group of experts who will “sift through” the good ideas that are already out there and come up with a recommendation. He went on to say that he hopes our memories aren’t so short that we forget about the children who were killed in less than a month. He continued, saying we should have the “sustained attention span” to get this done. The president also dismissed the idea that any legislation related to guns is an encroachment on the second amendment.
