New York Giants player Victor Cruz honored the family of 6-year Sandy Hook victim Jack Pinto by writing on on his cleats the words “Jack Pinto, My Hero” and “R.I.P. Jack Pinto.” On the back of his gloves, Cruz had written “Jack Pinto This one is 4 U.!”
The young Pinto was a huge Giants fan and an even bigger Cruz fan. After hearing of this, Cruz reached out to Pinto’s parents to offer his condolences.
“I also spoke to an older brother and he was distraught as well. I told him to stay strong and that I was going to do whatever I can to honor him,” Cruz said. “He was fighting tears and could barely speak to me.”
Cruz says he plans to give the gloves he wore during the game to the boy’s family. The family is considering burying Pinto in a Cruz jersey.
“There’s no words that can describe the type of feeling that you get when a kid idolizes you so much that unfortunately they want to put him in the casket with your jersey on,” he said. “I can’t even explain it.”
Sunday, Cruz tweeted a photo of the cleats he would wear in honor of Pinto.
The entire Giants team plans to have the words “S.H.E.S.” written on the back of their helmets in remembrance of the Sandy Hook victims.
Jack’s funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Monday at the Honan Funeral Home in Newtown,
