NAACP Not Excited About Rep. Tim Scott’s Appointment to U.S. Senate

The NAACP is technically an organization which seeks the advancements of all African-Americans, but the organization is not getting tim scottout the confetti or champagne to celebrate Rep. Tim Scott’s appointment to the U.S. Senate.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced Monday her appointment of Congressman Tim Scott to replace Jim DeMint, who is leaving to to head up the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

The appointment will make Scott the only black U.S. Senator, and the first ever to come out of South Carolina.

Hilary Shelton, senior vice president for advocacy and policy at the NAACP, told right wing blog The Daily Caller that the organization welcomes diversity, but feels Scott will work against its agenda.

“It is important that we have more integration in the U.S. Senate,” said Shelton in a phone interview. “It’s good to see that diversity.”

“Mr. Scott certainly comes from a modest background, experience, and so forth, and should be sensitive to those issues,” he said, referencing the fact that Scott was raised by a single mother.

“Unfortunately, his voting record in the U.S. House of Representatives raises major concerns,” Shelton said.

Shelton said the NAACP sees a greater role for government in the black community, and Scott would likely work against that.

“Small government usually means, as it’s being described these days, the elimination of the role of government and support for initiatives and programs that are crucial for the African-American community,” Shelton said.

Shelton concluded, saying, Scott has “has demonstrated a record of opposition to civil rights protection and advancing those real issues of concern of the NAACP’s noted African-American community,”

  1. So essentially the NAACP only likes diversity if said diversity agrees with what they believe. Wow! Talk about keeping black folk on the Liberal plantation. So much for independent thought and opposing views.

  2. Adolph Reed, Jr., a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, called Scott a “token” and added that minority politicians in the GOP will remain meaningless symbols as long as GOP policies don’t reflect mainstream black politics (in other words, as long as the GOP isn’t the Democratic Party).
MSNBC guest host Joy Reid delivered an open letter to Scott this week. She picked up on the “token” idea, said that the thinking (on the left) is that Scott’s selection was designed to improve the GOP image with minorities and show that it got “the diversity memo.” After criticizing his position on gun control, she went on to say, “But I do hope that as a senator, you’ll prove those who call you a ‘token’ wrong, and that you’re not just a new face touting the Grand Old Party line.”
Let’s be clear here. According to Reid and Reed, a black man in the GOP can only not be a token if he takes positions other than those that are common in the GOP, that is, he can only avoid being a token if his positions are more like those of Democrats.

  4. The NAACP is a worthless organization. The black community needs a new breed of leadership. Elected officials who truly respect the oath of office and our Constitution. Congressman Tim Scott, it is good to know that you exist, and I hope that you bring a new type of leadership to replace decades of inept leadership.

…..Instead of Congresswoman Karen Bass and her associates sending or emailing Barack Obama’s “Win tickets to the presidential inauguration” nonsense my direction, President Barack Obama, Congresswoman Karen Bass or her Congressional staff, and the Congressional Black Caucus should forget the inauguration ticket contest, and flood the “White House” with individuals that President Barack Obama truly serves……namely illegal aliens, illegal alien anchor babies, droves of individuals who don’t pay property taxes, treasonous individuals such as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, freeloaders, public service union leaders, SEIU members, droves of “low information morons, Reverend John Hunter, Reverend Creflo Dollar, Reverend Al Sharpton, other sleazy individuals etc., etc., to the Barack “the Magic Negro-Illegal Alien-The Food Stamp President” Obama’s Presidential inauguration.
