Marissa Alexander Released From Jail in Time For Thanksgiving

On Thanksgiving Marissa Alexander can give thanks that she will be spending the holiday with her family marissa_alexanderinstead of behind bars. At around 10:30pm last night, Alexander was released from jail on bond.

Alexander’s release does not come without conditions, which were thoroughly outlined by the Duval County Clerk.

Here are some of her bond conditions, according to First Coast News:

• Subject to electronic monitoring through the CTC at all times
• Remain on home detention until completion of her case and will not be allowed to leave her residence except for court appearances, medical emergencies and to satisfy any requirements of PSP or the CTC
• Report all required court appearances and all required appointments with the PSP or its designated service provider
• Alexander cannot change her residence without prior notice and approval by the PSP or its designated service provider
• Cannot have contact with, nor communicate by any means with Rico Gray, Sr., Pernell Gray and Rico Gray, Jr.

Alexander was convicted in 2010 after firing what she says were warning sh0ts at her husband. She says she went to get her gun after her husband broke down a bathroom door where she ran to get away from him. Prosecutors alleged that the sh0t Alexander fired was in the direction of her husband and children.

Dr. Boyce Watkins from Your Black World, says that Alexander’s release should have happened a long time ago.

“Let’s not pretend that this is still not a complete tragedy,” says Dr. Watkins, who informed the nation of the case of Kelly Williams-Bolar, a woman sent to jail for sending her kids to a school outside her district.  “Marissa should never have been jailed in the first place.  This case shines a spotlight on all of the women who are mortified by abusive husbands and don’t feel they can get help from the law.”

An appeals court ordered a new trial for Alexander after determining that the judge committed an error with jury instructions.

The jury in Alexander’s trial returned with a verdict after only 13 minutes of deliberation, convicting Alexander on three counts of aggravated armed assaµlt. Her 20 year sentence triggered national outrage.

While I wholeheartedly agree that We should be thankful that Sister Michelle is out of jail, We should not confuse that with she being “Free”. Those of us who are outraged by this case in the first place, should hold on to the anger it brought out of each of us as a lasting stimulus for creating change. All of us must join a group that is working for social justice for Black People and become Active in the movement to create the change WE want to see and need to see. Also, if you are a part of a group, association, club, agency and/or entity that calls itself anything associated with “Black People”, you should become an advocate for Progressive Social Action on the part of your Black Entity. And you should encourage Social Networking among all “Black Entities” that expedites the type of change We Want & Need to see happen.

    • Progressive activism is the newest means of fencing people in and getting the uninformed to follow a particular agenda. You might note Progressive activism is the term used by the communist and the current democratic party.

It may be popular today to associate or declare your self a progressive, however remember, everything that goes into the cloud stays, and can be used against you in the future. Being a Progressive organization may be in vogue today but I believe in the 2016 election it will be most detrimental to have been associated with anything Progressive. Just my opinion.

  7. Thank God Marissa Alexander is finally released from prison. This Lady should never have been incarcerated in the first place. I hope she can fight for an appeal to have all restrictions removed and expunged. It reveals just how unfair and unjust laws, especially in Florida,Georgia,Louisiana,Mississippi,Texas,Virginia and other Southern States are old, racist an outdated. We should fight these un-legal laws, corrupted judges, prosecutors, state and district attorneys. They should be brought to justice themselves, for the lives that they have ruined.

  8. Leaglly, did someone really just use that word definding the state of Florida

  9. Like many people I’m glad Marissa is home, however this young lady should have never been arrested. And after being granted a new trail she should have been released that same hour without a bail. It 2013 and it’s earthly sad that blacks still have to demand justice a lot has changed and a lot has not changed this case still has injusticed written all over it. The system gives us just enough to lower our voices while they think of a more dialobical plan. They make the law they break the law. And the conditions that they placed on this woman just to make bond are Super Stupid

  10. Thank god she out she never belonged there any way. Im glad to see something good taking place in the life of a black person who is getting national media attention.

  11. I’m happy to see that this innocent lady is nearly free. I truly hope that she obey the rules that’s applies ahead of her. But the thing is that [STAND YOUR GROUND] LAW does not apply to the Blacks at all.Think about Zimmerman, for what he did and got away it. I see this law as racial than racial can get.Florida laws S…ks.

My daughter was recently found guilty of manslaughter for killing a angry, violent ,high on alcohol & cocain man. He was kicking & beating on her front door. She went down the back stairc & asked him to please stop because 4 of her 5 kids were in there. He lunged at her & she stabbed him. The DA didn’t look at it as self defense or justifiable homicide. Now she awaits sentencing of 5 to 40 years. He came to her home and upset the peace of their household . The law still sucks in Louisiana. This man had a history of drug abuse and physical abuse on others. I guess she was suppose to let him in so he could kill her & her children. Pray for us.

    • If that is the case she should have requested a different DA it is within your rights to request another DA if they aren’t doing there jobs correctly.

    • Did she have a violent criminal record of assaulghts/batteries? Did she leave the altercation to get a weapon, come back and use it like the above did? I’ve learned that criminal past can effect the courts desicions.

Sometimes folks are plain ole racist and sometimes our people actually committed the crime accused of.

Get a new lawyer and see if there are any loopwholes in the case to maybe get the conviction overturned.
