Goodbye Soledad O’Brien? CNN Expected to Make Big Moves

If there is anything on the mind of CNN boss Jeff Zucker, it’s ratings.  The network is finding that programming that is fair, neutral and truly balanced doesn’t do as well as the crazy stuff that we see every night on Fox News and MSNBC.  One of the moves that Zucker is considering is cutting Soledad O’Brien in the morning and replacing her with a “lighter and brighter” option, Erin Burnett.

Burnett currently hosts on CNN at 7 pm, but a source told the New York Post that Zucker is strongly considering pushing her to mornings.

“Zucker thinks she’s a real talent,” a source told The Post. “He’ll team her up with a guy, and they’ll go after the audience watching ‘Today’ and ‘Good Morning America.’ One thing Zucker knows how to do is a morning show.”

Zucker might know how to get people to start watching CNN again.  He was the executive producer for NBC’s Today back in 1992, which was the dominant morning show for 16  years.  There is no word on what would happen to O’Brien and her trademark series, “Black in America.”  But the move would be disappointing to those who enjoy seeing darker faces on television.

  1. I saw was able to view her show on one occasion. Although, I like her when she does the special feature reporting, I think she was a little too flighty and she seemed to ramble a bit too much for the show. Now I disagree with them replacing her with Erin, I kind of think that Soledad does well when she focused.

  2. To cut Soledad would be a grave mistake

  4. Hello Neighbors, Friends, and Professional Contacts,

I hope that work is going and pray for the continued success. Can anyone actually enable me to meet Mrs. O'Brien? I mainly would like to connect with Soledad, because she really misses the mark on many aspects of adequate reporting of the African-American experience in America. I spoke to others who feel the same and by emphasizing the problems and not addressing systemic root causes is a true injustice to Black folks.

Would "Black" folks at CNN avoid addressing true plights if his or her job was at stake? What are the root causes for judicial injustice and inequality in America? The reports are not balanced. How may I meet with her? They say that we should admonish or scrutinize each other in public or the open like on blogs and what not, but folks like Soledad isolate themselves so far from regular folks like us; we have to conduct a public outcry all over the internet against folks just to reach her or him.

After my most recently unfortunate breakup of my last relationship, I did some refreshing self-reflection. During my studies, not only did I uncover several learning points, but I discovered a lot about relationships in general. Here is a very humorous and facetious novel that I came across. I hope that you share the link with your friends and family. The brothers will simply laugh. Every sister needs to hear this. Every sister should to hear this prior to entering another relationship:

There are very many public policies and laws that have grave impact on the socio-economic wellbeings of the African-American culture by emotional and financially incentivizing behavior that breed lack of empathy, dehumanization, and objectification. If any network is interested, I would like to work with a network to produce a show that would address how lack of empathy, dehumanization, and objectification continues to further destroy America. Due to biasness and negligent portrayal of African-Americans by the media, other cultures have safety-nets.

Lack of Empathy, Dehumanization, & Objectification: How does this forge the African-American Experience?

Please feel free to forward this e-mail as you liberally see fit.

    Warm Regards,
    Eli

  5. Tell CNN if they need a replacement with the real information, give me a call.

  6. She should of been gone a long time ago.

  7. It will be a great pleasure to see her go. She has not helped America's black plight in the least.

  8. Check the history of CNN it speaks for itself! I am not mad at them at all! Be serious for a moment, would a white or asian host make it on BET as a DJ host or news reporter? NO! Why, because the target audience wouldn't watch! Case in point, the majority white audience is not going to tune in at large rating to watch a black, half black, bi-racial or however someone defines themselves (no disrespect)! They only see black and that's a problem for white America! REAL TALK!

  9. No black face or person claiming the black race will ever be successful on CNN in prime time slots (morning or evening. News)!!

  10. Lorraine Howell Grey

Good bye CNN! I'm out. She is one of the top talents on CNN. What a disappointing move. Shame on you CNN!

  11. I like Soledad and I hope she lands on her feet. Soledad I support you and shame on any of you that speaks about whether she is Black enough. What in the world is that suppose to mean. What is Black enough. It is not enough that some White people are racist but then you have Black people complaining about whether she is Black enough…we are all Bi-Racial..ALL OF US…GET OVER IT.

  12. CNN, I hope you are reading all of these comments that support Soledad O’Brien. This is not a good move for this morning spot. Drop her and your ratings will drop!!!

  13. CNN, I hope you are reading all of these comments that support Soledad O’Brien. This is not a good move for this morning spot. Drop her and your ratings will drop!!!

  14. This would be wrong on every level….

  15. ERIN BENNETT. I DON’T THINK SO . IT WOULD BE LIKE LISTENING TO MORNING JOE TELL LIES ALL MORNING AND ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF BOYS. TRY CURRENT TV ,THE BILL PRESS AND STEPHANIE MILLER SHOW. ATLEAST, THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE NEWS& ENGAGEMENT WITH A SMILE. CNN SEE YEA.

  18. Is she or isn’t she..Black or Black enough! Good bye and good riddance.

  19. I hate to see Soledad go; she is my idol. I love her. She is smart and beautiful.

  20. Good! I cant stand her or her “Black In America” series. Tired of them focusing and studying us like f-in labrats!!

  21. As soon as she started asking those probing questions and contesting the conventional wisdom with the truthier alternative she was toast.
Let's see if MSNBC has the huevos to hire her.

  22. Who cares? She’s just another talking head with marching orders. She’ll get hired at MSNBC and start their song and dance next. Yawn.

  23. First of all, you can “look” at Soledad and tell you she is “mixed” heritage, including BLACK! And as for T.J. Holmes, I “read” that it was HIS IDEA to leave and go to a “different” network, doing what he would have more “freedom” doing, even taking “less” pay.

  24. No more cnn for me then…. Oh well…..

  25. Soledad O’Brien’s departure from CNN will show that CNN, which once was the go-to network for real news, has dropped the ball and wants to dumb-down news. Fine. Do that and lose viewership. It was nice seeing you.

  26. Zucker needs to give O’Brien more credit

  27. Sterling Innovalogic

First of all I have never cared for CNN. The way in which they have covered any story has always been very weak, and I would find myself changing the channel, and many of the individuals did not do much for me either. It is the right thing to be even handed and fair, but do it more substantive, and more provocative; make me want to stay with you. I do not know this Erin Burnett person, but I have never care for Soledad O'Brien's style or the very flippant manner in which she spoke. I turned off to her when she did the documentary on Dr. Kings assassination. It was not good, and it rubbed me the wrong way. It was very weak, and she was very matter-of-fact with the information, as if it were the gospel truth. We all know just how complicated and sinister that time in history was. The other documentaries were the same, and left a lot to be desired. If Soledad is worth her salt, she'll rise up in another place. God Bless Her.

  28. Great. Let Soledad have a prime time slot on the network. She deserves it!

  29. ANALYST. Sorry about the spelling..

  30. CNN cannot hold a candle to MSNBC. At least I can watch MSNBC and see a rainbow of analysis, instead of that sad “house mentality” line-up!

  31. James, I totally agree with you IAM not surprise that the Networks are turning a blind eye toward Black Journalist, they wish all Blacks would tune in to Bet MTV and VH1, those are the Stations we as Black folks Should Boycott.

  32. Jacqueline g Coleman

CNN HAS CHANGED DRAMATICALLY SINCE I STARTED LOOKING AT IT IN 2005 WITH KATRINA COVERAGE WITH ANDERSON COOPPER AND I REALLY ENJOYED LOOKING AT IT BUT I NOTICED DURING AND PRIOR TO THE ELECTION BY THE PEOPLE THAT STARTED SHOWING UP ON THE PANELS IT IS GETTING MORE REPUBLICAN THAN I WANT TO SEE. I LIKE NONE BIAS PROGRAMMING AND IT IS GETTING MORE FOR CONSERVATIVES THAN EVER.FIRST T. J .HOLMES NOW SOLADAD O’BRIEN WHAT IS GOING ON!!! ‘A LOT’ OF PEOPLE AS I LOOKED AT IT FOR A WHILE AND ARE DISENCHANTED WITH ITS PROGRAMMING LATELY.ZUCKER NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO BE MORE ENCLUSIVE AND WELCOME ALL RACES TO HELP MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF EVENTS IN OUR WORLD. I FEEL SOLEDAD IS AN EXCELLENT ANCHOR/REPORTER AND THE STORIES ARE EDUCATIONAL AND MAKE “ALL PEOPLE” AWARE OF EVENTS SO VITAL TO OUR SOCIETY.I HOPE THEY RECONSIDER THIS MATTER.ERIN IS GOOD ALSO AND WOMEN SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE A SHOW “ALONE” WE DON’T NEED A MAN TO HELP US CARRY A PROGRAM. BOTH OF THESE WOMEN ARE AN ASSET TO CNN AND SHOULD BE APPRECIATED FOR EACH OF THEIR TALENTS.I ENJOY ERIN ON LOCATION THE BEST COVERING WORLD EVENTS AND SOLEDAD’S SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS ARE SO GOOD ALSO.LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE APPRECIATE THE WOMEN WHO ARE AT YOUR STATION AND THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE/HAD BEEN LOOKING AT CNN AND WHAT WE WANT TO SEE/ENJOY.KEEP PERSONAL OPINIONS TO ONES’ SELF. JUST DO THE WORK AND LET US MAKE OUR OWN VIEWS.

  33. Soledad is professional, polished, personable and dedicated. If you need to remove her from the slot, Brooke Baldwin has caused me to stop watching CNN at her time slot. Put Soledad in Brooke's slot. Brooke is trying too hard to be one of the boys! I watched Erin for several weeks. I did not like her presentation. Therefore, I ceased watching her. I can assure you that she is no substitue for Soledad.

  34. You had your chance it was called BET , you didn’t want challenging thought provoking programming , you opted for booty shaking and bling . This is what black people have been boiled down to , why are you shocked and dismayed ? We always say we have these billions of consumers dollars , it would appear that we don’t possess the clout we think we have .

  35. You would think that the Zuckers of the world would finally get it – CNN need to better represent the diversity of the viewing population. Aside from that boring Erin Burnett replacing an engaging Soledad OBrien, you’ve got to be kidding me! CNN will pay a big price should this switch occur.

  36. This would be sad if Soledad is replaced because she is a tough, well prepared journalist with just the right amount of flair. I don't get it, but I don't write the checks either. That said, it is disappointing to see two very professional African-Americans leave the show in the same year. I miss TJ Holmes very much for his professionalism and his style. We need to have more, not fewer great role models like TJ and Soledad. I hope the management at CNN will re-consider this. If not, I'm gone over to Morning Joe as well.

  37. well if Soledad goes so do i, she is the only reason I watch CNN in the first place. they don't want any PPL OF COLOR ON THE AIR IN THE FIRST PLACE. sOLEDAD GETS TO THE ISSUES AND CALLS HYPOCRITES OUT ON THEIR LIES AND EXAGGERATIONS.

  38. I love watching Soledad in the morning. In fact I turn off everything at 7am to watch. If this Zucker moves her then I move and there are many more who think as I do. CNN isn’t exactly the place for black people period, if they keep moving and shaking black peole from its programing than we all maybe moving our attention somewhere else.

  39. Management found out that she was really black after she hosted the Black in America series!

  40. If Soledad goes, I go with her. I like her style and how she asks questions and follow-up. She always comes back to the main questions. She doesn’t let her guess off the hook.

  41. Erin Burnett is garbage.. That’s the first thing… You replace Soledad with her and CNN rating will et worse.

I really hope Soledad leaves CNN altogether. It will be easier for me to watch her if she does.

    • I am not an Erin fan either, personally I don’t like her style of presentation. Why does CNN want to replace diversity for more of the same “predominately White media”. I personally prefer diversity in people, views, ethnicity etc. Replacing Soladad with Erin is going back to the same old American style TV…Everyone is of the same race and thought process. Reality is, America is changing and becoming more diverse. Come on CNN move with the times.

  42. No worries this maybe a blessing in disguise. Soledad can join MSNBC or TJ and Soledad can bring some education to BET if BET wants to bring newsworthy individuals to their station.

  43. I wonder if she is sorry that she finally confessed her Black Heritage, that there is racial equality, or that she still diagrees with Rev. Jesse Jackson.

  44. I wonder if she is sorry that she finally confessed her Black Heritage, that there is racial equality, or that she still diagrees with Rev. Jesse Jackson.

    • I think she is awesome becuase she enables African Americans to be heard ! She didn’t dog President Obama, I think thats why she is probably getting heat because she seemed to endorse him openly and when she went at Joel Osteen, that was awesome because he could not answer her questions. As for Jessie, didn’t he oppose our President himself?

  45. I wonder if she is sorry that she finally confessed her Black Heritage, that there is racial equality, or that she still diagrees with Rev. Jesse Jackson.

    • It is sad to hear CNN is planning to cut Soledad. I am very disappointed. She is a vey talented journalist with her trade marks Black in America and Latino in America. She brought to CNN new viewers. If CNN cut her, CNN will loose more viewers like me . They cut TJ they may be planning to cut Don Lemon too . Don will be the only Black face on prime time at CNN. I am sure another Network will pick her up. I Hope Oprah will consider putting her on OWN.

  46. If Soledad goes, I go!!! She is the only reason I watch CNN.

  47. CNN HAS BEEN CUTTING BLACKS FROM THEIR SHOWS FOR SOME TIME. FIRST, TJ NOW SOLDDAD. SEEMS TO ME LIKE
A BLACK FACE IS A TURN-OFF ON CNN. THATS WHY I WATCH MSNBC NOW.

  48. CNN HAS BEEN CUTTING BLACKS FROM THEIR SHOWS FOR SOME TIME. FIRST, TJ NOW SOLDDAD. SEEMS TO ME LIKE
A BLACK FACE IS A TURN-OFF ON CNN. THATS WHY I WATCH MSNBC NOW.

  49. Is it just me or do any of you find it absolutely ridiculous that this article equates MSNBC with the Foxed up Nutwork. And in case you missed it lighter and brighter means dumbing down which seems to be the direction CNN is taking!

  50. Trina-Ramona Jackson

If that happens I am officially done with CNN since that is the only show I watch on that channel anyway.

  51. It will be a great day when Black folks get off of thestop ir collective knees and stop begging white people to do for us what everyboby is doing for themselves. It is well documented we African Americans watch way more TV than anybody else.

We give them billions and they give garbage, commercials and this wierd reality where we give them unfiltered access to our minds and the minds of our children. I don't know if people are aware that they used to call TV an"IDIOT BOX".

Real Black news is on the Interner. Find it and support it.

  52. CNN lost me when they "changed channels." Now I even forget that they are on unless someone tells me that saw something on CNN.
This sounds like the "same old story but on a different day." Can you imagine "the uproar if it were the reverse and we saw more people of color on TV!" OMG!

  53. Its unfortunate the powers that be see life from a very small window. The view is usually dollar green. The Soledad O'Brian program is a voice in the right direction in terms of progressive television. The show offers a fresh non-traditional format with a culturally diverse panel of independent thinkers. I vote to keep it.

  54. And they still have Lemon???

  55. Guess she became a bit to caring about blacks. SMH

  56. El'Malik Abdul Muhammed

So she's not Black enuff for some of you knegrows and now you wont see any Blackness at all on CNN after she's gone! What exactly is Black enough cause it sure isn't just skin colour?

    • She is fine enough for me to stop channel surfing when ever she is on. She is also smart enough to keep me listening to what she has to say. This is not cool with me at all.

    • El'Malik Abdul Muhammed

Timothy L Skaggs. Well said brother. Great minds think alike as see always gets my attention in what she says, she's Black and very easy on the eyes, hotep!!

    • She lost me with the "black" in America. Why not African-American in America, we are more than a color.

    • Elizabeth, please speak for yourself. I for one do not like the term African-American because it is a misnomer and I don't use it. I know many blacks who do not use the term for the same or similar reasons. If you and yours want to use it, feel free. But, don't propose to speak for all of us. Peace out.

    • why? none of us ever set foot in Africa! We are Black Americans?
That is what the real Africans call us . They dont take ownership of us anyway!

  57. The problem with CNN is they do not have enough diversity as it is. A couple of black faces is not nearly enough. The demographics are changing in America and CNN needs to get a clue. It's a damn shame the current leadership at CNN brought down one of the most respected news networks on cable. Without Ted Turner CNN is toast.

  58. SOLEDAD IS ONE OF THE MOST UNBIASED AND INTELLIGENT COMMENTATORS ON TV TODAY. SHE IS SENSITIVE TO POPULATIONS MANY OTHERS IN COMPARABLE POSITIONS ARE NOT AND I WOULD THINK, THEREFORE, HITTING A NUMBER OF VIEWERS FAVORABLY. MINORITY VIEWERS ARE HUGE AND NEED A PERSPECTIVE SENSITIVE TO THEIR NEEDS.

WHAT IS FRIGHTENING TO ME IS THE THE POPULATION SHE SERVES MOST EFFECTIVELY IS LESS LIKELY TO RESPOND TO VOICE THEIR SUPPORT OF HER. I HOPE I WILL BE FOUND TO BE TOTALLY WRONG!

KEEP SOLEDAD HIGHLY VISIBLE – HIGHLY EFFECTIVE. SHE MAKES US ALL GREATER IN MANY, MANY WAYS!

    MICHAEL GREENE, COLUMBUS, OHIO.

  59. JamesWorldwide GreatHabu Britton

Zucker is going to do what? Are you serious? Really? Hey Zucker, if you get rid of Soledad, then stand by to lose a lot of your viewers. I happen to love how she keeps it real, She calls an ugly baby and ugly baby. And to think that your motives has something to do with what FAUX NEWS is or isn't doing is a travesty. I count on CNN to report the news in an unbias manner. If you are trying to do destroy CNN by getting rid of Soledad, then do it on your own time not mine. I watch CNN all day long, my favorite part is Soldedad's reports. I hope you do reconsider this bad choice.

  60. Jeff Zucker, you should really think this through. There is such potential increase for CNN viewers if you continue with Soledad O'brien. She is a true reflection of a dimension of voices not rarely heard openly in America. She has the ability to address "all of the people". You have a nugget in your hand, cultivate it.

  61. What a surprise.. I'm telling black folks that we need to come together and have our own real black news morning and night show..

  62. Well the reality is this! No matter how she carries herself or that her husband is of Anglo descent or that she is Afro-Cuban! They only see her as one thing and one thing only! A BLACK FACE! Sad but true!!

  63. I like Soledad O'Brien. I don't know what the problem really is. She is great at what she does. So why make any changes. Leave well enough alone. Listen to the people Zucker. CNN won't be the same. I will stop watching CNN if you get rid of her. I'll go exclusively to MSNBC thanks to Zucker.

  64. I like Soledad, I think it would be a really bad move for CNN.

  65. Soledad has a very "white" life. See how she constantly dissed Pres Obama during the elections? Soledad and Jack Cafferty turned me off from CNN…I say good riddance eventhough I stopped watching CNN.

    • We must have been watching two different shows because she was called an Obama supporter by the Repubs who came on her show. Like many on here I stopped watching Morning Joe to watch her because she didn't allow the Repubs to come on her show and lie without calling them out. You say she has a very white life..do you know her personally?

  66. Replace her with Angela Davis.

    • No Not Angela Davis that woman has way too much intellect for CNN.

    • Antonio De La Cova

María de la Soledad Teresa O'Brien is half Afro Cuban mulata and 46 years old. Erin Burnett is ten years younger and white. It's obvious to me why the choice was made. Angela Davis is 68 years old!

    • Antonio De La Cova
Mullato means mule do not use that word. Other than that I agree with your premise. Angela would be way to smart for the network.

    • Hey AJ you forgot to put the LOL at the end of your remark on Angela Davis as a replacement for Soledad!

    • Fred, did you get a chance to watch Professor Henry Louis Gates' " Black in Latin America?" While I don't propose to speak for Antonio, I'm guessing that his usage of that term mullato might have something to do with his culture. Among Latin American cultures the term is considered negative or passe the way it is in the U.S. Nor does it necessarily have the meaning of mule in the context of Latin American cultures. Because Soledad is a part of the Latin culture, it is probably apporpriate to refer to her as mullata(o) without offense being intended or taken.

  67. I personally Love Soledad O'Brien, She is professional but tough. Ask former Mayor Giuliani. She verbally bitch slap his ass days before the election. I quit watching Morning Joe because of her. So if they fire Soledad, I'm gone too.

  68. Yes she does William S. Rodney because she identifies herself as Afro-Latino plus she has darker skinned family members also the series BLACK IN AMERICA was her project!!!

  69. Soledad O’Brien, a "darker face" on television? Let's get real. Do you thing that she identifies with these so called darker faces?

    • At least she tries!!!

    • William, what makes you think she doesn't. Do you know her personally?
I have a dark face, and I'm fine with her.

    • Get real you must be Flying high on something other than aviation fuel. It is apparent that you do not watch her AM show or specials. Which my family and I look forward to.

    • Get real you must be Flying high on something other than aviation fuel. It is apparent that you do not watch her AM show or specials. Which my family and I look forward to.

    • So True! If they get rid of her, I will have no use for CNN!

    • Mr. Mitchem, I don't have to be flying high on anything to have an opinion of my own! By the way, who made you the "thought police?" Finally, must we denigrate another who thinks differently?

  70. I've watched Erin and she is very aggressive and combative with her guest, so I guess that is the direction CNN wants to go in for their audience. That's why I now watch MSNBC.
