Former NFL Star Warren Sapp Begging for Relief from His Five Baby Mamas

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

Ex-NFL superstar Warren Sapp has fallen upon hard times lately.  The former Miami Hurricane great is finding that child support is not as much fun as making babies, and is now begging the courts to give him a reduction in the 2,500 per month he’s paying one of the many women with whom he has fathered a child.

According to TMZ, Sapp filed paperwork requesting that his support obligations to Angela Sanders be dropped from the existing obligation of $2,500 per month, which should be chump change for a player who once signed a 7-year, $36.6 million dollar contract with the Oakland Raiders.  For the record, that means that he earned over $14,000 a day, or about $429,000 per month, making $2,500 seem pale in comparison.

Obviously, Sanders is a little bit irritated by Sapp’s request, since she made an agreement back in 2000 that the support would not be modified based on changes in income.   At the time, she could have easily demanded as much as $10,000 per month, but instead took a modest amount that probably made her look stupid to her friends.  So, the woman doesn’t appear to be anyone’s gold digger, and some would say that a millionaire should be paying far more to take care of his children.

Years later, after filing for bankruptcy protection and blowing all of his money on all kinds of stupid stuff, including 240 pairs of rare Air Jordans,  Sapp is now whining to the courts for sympathy, even though they may end up putting his butt in jail.  Not only does Sapp owe big money to Sanders, but he’s got four other mothers standing line, hands on their hips, wondering why the checks stopped coming in.

As  a Finance Professor, I often cringe  when I see how young brothers allow their arrogance to lead them to make horrible life decisions that leave them destitute, depressed, marginalized and possibly incarcerated.  You’re the big man on campus when you’re catching passes on TV and hip hop music teaches you that “a real n*gga gotta keep his hoes in check.”  So, you’re running through women like Black Friday sales at Walmart, always forgetting that chickens (and baby mamas) always come home to roost.

Years later, when the financial party is over and none of the teams are blowing up your phone the way they used to, you find yourself with little education, no good investments, and a long list of creditors, dependents and “ignant” financial obligations.   That’s when the hero has turned into a zero, and you get to spend the next 40 years paying the price for a series of unintelligent and exceedingly arrogant decisions (there were surely many people who tried to give Sapp good advice along the way, but dollar bills up to your ears can make you hard of hearing).

A full 78% of professional athletes end up going broke, much of this due to inadequate financial education and poor family planning.  The NFL’s financial responsibility seminars aren’t doing the job, and these men who threw away all of their educational opportunities for the chance to risk permanent brain damage often find that a) there are easier ways to make money than this, and b) an uneducated man and his money will usually part ways.

I’m not here to beat up on Warren Sapp, for I wish him well.   Instead, I’d rather encourage all of us to see the life of Warren Sapp as a living, breathing text book on how to engage in good life management.  Here are a couple of things we can learn from this latest episode of the Maury Povich Show for Negroes:

1) No matter what you do, always get a good education:  Athletes, I hate to say it, are used up and distributed like cattle.  The athlete is almost never as well off as his Harvard-educated attorney, and it’s shameful that so many black men are taught that the false lottery ticket of sports is their only way to financial security.  Remaining uneducated only opens the door for a smart person to steal all your money while you’re at the club gulping bottles of Patron and creating baby mamas with 2Chainz playing in the background.  All such forms of coonery should be outlawed all violators should be slapped on sight.

2) Be thoughtful about where you spread your seed:  The rule of thumb for the thoughtless, perpetually aroused young male is this: “If she looks good, and she offers, then I’m gonna hit that.” But we often forget that irresponsibility in the bedroom can lead to enough STDs to turn you into a walking CDC alert, and also lead you to be strapped onto a person you barely know or care about for the next 18 years.   Be smart about your choices when it comes to the opposite gender, for these  choices play a tremendous role in shaping the trajectory of your life.

It’s time to change the paradigm of the black athlete in America instead of repeating the same old story.  By educating ourselves and each other, we can create progress instead of going backward.  While the stories about men like Warren Sapp are blasted all over the media, we should also consider the stories of brilliant men like Allan Houston (former NY Knick) and Etan Thomas (Washington Wizards), who not only made sound financial decisions, but are also extraordinary role models, very well-educated and outstanding family men.   I am moderating a panel on fatherhood at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem with both men on December 6th of this year and I swell up with pride when I see black male athletes using their powerful platforms to do something other than to serve as a puppet for corporate America:  The black community is suffering, with the black male at risk of extinction – we need our best, brightest and baddest to lend their voices to the people they love.

The life you live tomorrow is created by the choices you make today.  Learning from the good and bad decisions of those who came before you is critical to your survival.   But living the fast life without proper planning is like driving 100 miles per hour while wearing a blind fold:  The crash is both painful and inevitable.

  1. Another dumas rich muthafucka who has so much money, but won't buy condoms!

  2. Plain and simple. If you have unprotected sex, you plan on having a baby. Yes, it takes two. But, Warren was the one making the decision to risk his wealth. He is the slow thinking, irresponsible and undisciplined constant in all of this.

  3. This is what SINFUL BEHAVIOR will get you!! Get control of your lustful ways and seek God and He will make a way for him to manage the mothers, his children and his life. Get off of your high horse and humble yourself and turn to God while you can, tomorrow is not promised to anyone!

  4. These white girls get paid and these ni s can pay b4 or afterwards. Smh

  5. I UNDERSTAND THE SOCIALIZATION, BUT FOR SOME REASON I DONT FEEL SORRY FOR THE BROTHA

  6. These athletes go broke for a number of reasons. The main reason is that they fail to save their money. They spend until it is all gone. Pro athletes fail to realize that they have a narrow window of opportunity in which to make their money. These men and women need to invest their money and reduce their living expenses. The baby momma issues reflects the athletes general lack of discipline and planning.

I hate to hear these people referred to millionaires. Most millionaires live off of capital gains. These guys are salaried and pay taxes at a much higher rate than most millionaires.

Put another way, why would the fifth baby's mama have sex with a dude that has children by four other women? I'm just sayin''.

    • In the words of that great philosopher: "She takes my money when I'm in need. Yeah she's a trifling friend indeed. Oh she's a gold digger way over town. Now I ain't saying she's a gold digger (when I'm in need); but she ain't messin' with no broke n****s."

    • Maybe Warren should've talked to Kanye: "18 years, 18 years
She got one of your kids got you for 18 years
I know somebody paying child support for one of his kids
His baby mamma's car and crib is bigger than his
You will see him on TV any given Sunday
Win the Superbowl and drive off in a Hyundai
She was suppose to buy you shorty TYCO with your money
She went to the doctor got lypo with your money
She walking around looking like Michael with your money
Should of got that insured got GEICO for your money
If you ant no punk holla we want prenup
      WE WANT PRENUP! Yeah
It's something that you need to have
'Cause when she leave yo ass she gone leave with half
      18 years, 18 years
And on her 18th birthday he found out it wasn't his"

    • Traci, you shoulda rapped that with a Buc's jersey on and uploaded the video!! Lol

    • The more pertinent question: why would a man with so many children already make another? From the 5th female's view, why should she be concerned? He wasn't Ray-Ray living in his mom's basement, he was a pro athlete who, had he managed his money, would have been able to provide for his children into adulthood.

    • Ronald D. O'Neal Jr.

I'm thinking that the 5th woman might think, "hmmm…he's already got 4 kids by 4 different women. Maybe he has issues with personal commitment and responsibility. I might just want to forego getting pregnant with him.". I'm not excusing his behavior–I'm just puzzled by women who chase after, and have kids with, men who CLEARLY have had recent issues with fathering too many kids with too many other women. The analysis of these women and their pathologies gets lost in the media focus on the the celebrity deadbeats.

  8. Ronald D. O'Neal Jr.

All that you say has truth in it. However, given those facts, what is going on with the women who continue to chase these athletes and have their babies?

  9. Codrington C. Dapp

Stop spending all of your money on rims…typical behavior of people who aren’t used to having anything…

  10. Most people are dumping on Warren, yet very few are acknowledging that there is a second party in this equation. The Mothers. Why are so few bringing them to task for their responsibilty in this fiasco. Same way he could've worn a Condom, women have means of Birth Control too, and it's old news where there are a lot of women who target idiots like him, make a baby, so they can get the money. Have not heard the other side of this equation in that they are hard working, and doing their best to provide for these children. Lord knows how many in the past, present, future aren't even trying to get a job to take care of their half of the responsibilty. As Judge Judy once told a woman, suing her ex-Husband over some B.S., and the husband had full custody of their children, and she was not paying child support, and admitted she wasn't was told, just because you where a Dress, doesn't mean you don't have to pay child support. Women have fought for equality hard and long, so why do people not call them into account just like you expect the men to? Fair is fair. I know there will be some that want to send derogatory emails criticizing me for saying this but I could care less, because it is correct, and just.

    • It's not about preventing the child from being here…that's been done over a decade ago. NO form of contraception is 100% fool proof, and if this woman only wanted the money from him, she never would have settled on getting $2,500/month with no adjustments for his future income.

The issue is him not doing what the courts ordered. She HAS to work, few folks with children can live on $2,500/month…she did nothing wrong here. And let's not forget the fact that the woman in this case is bearing most of the burden for raising that child, physically, financially and emotionally (as is usually the case). Remember that most women, upwards of 60%, who have a court order for child support with an NCP that is a Black male do not receive that support consistently. But sure, let's blame the women since it's easier thank tackling the true problems here.

Your line of thinking, i.e. blame the woman for SOMETHING no matter what type of sh*t the man does, is why so many Black males think it's just fine to have little accountability for their children.

    • The mothers definitely play a vital part in all of this but the common denominator is Warren himself.

Here's what we know for sure is that he is 1) behind in his support payments 2)Spent all his money on BS instead of real sh*t. 3) He's crying like a bi*ch because now he wants some mercy.

Let us not condemn the mothers for taking care of their children.

  11. I like all able bodied men who have escaped the disasters of undesired child birth want to join in your massive condemnations of all of those physically fit, health sexually (rich) attractive young athletes who have created such a problem for all of us. BUT WAIT! Maybe there may be another thought to be added other than the biblical one “judge not”. You touched on the subject when you pointed out that the young men were “uneducated” and thus whether we like it or not will become the victims of a system that is calculated to turn the head of anyone who may be eligible. To point to the few “educated” individuals as an example of what all men should be may not be the right solution. Let us suggest that any reward that may be given to anyone be based on the lifetime earnings of the individual based on the past record of athletes not on the few years of high earnings. I don’t follow sports, however I do believe that if anyone was interested in seeing the big picture they would see that few athletes have a very high lifetime earnings. Those individuals around them do profit however. As you point out his only talent is his physical capabilities in many instances and he ends up very poor. The large child support payments and alimony payments are good for the lawyers, recipients of the rewards as long as the individual can play and then it is all over. The lawyer has his up front, the child is left out and as you say the individual ends up in jail for failure to pay. If rewards were based on lifetime earnings or let us say an eighteen (18) years lifetime average, I doubt if as many young women would allow themselves to become impregnate, since they have the ability to use various birth control methods very effectively. Let us stop blaming the man for every child birth alone “It takes two to tangle” unless it is called rape!

  12. Yea, people almost never plan to have kids, but they ALWAYS plan to have sex. But people seem to forget that these two acts are pretty well connected, but are always wondering how they ended up in their current situation.

To me, that's like people saying "I didn't plan to have a car accident today. If I had known, I would have bought insurance."

    • disgraceful, if u know u cant afford 2 take care of kids, don't have them. Strap up

    • He is so arrogant and an a**hole anyway!

    • I care about the children because they are unwitting pawns in a grown up game. Warren was stupid not wear protection, but it takes TWO. What about the RESPONSIBILTY of the other half of this equation. I do not know any of the Mothers, but let's keep it real, there are so many of them that allow themselves to get pregnant for financial gain, so don't always blame just the man. I blame them both, equally.

    • They had an equal part in making the child, but him not taking care of his responsibilities is 100% his issue.

  13. It's not a hard concept! When it get's "hard", wrap that ish up! Simple!

  14. Very well written article. It needs to be read by young men and young women. Education is key. Practice safe sex. Abstain set your goals in life and go for them. Get married and there shouldn’t be any baby mommas or poppas

  15. Poor Warren. Pay the lady, Asshole.

  16. Continued.
Although black men can be a little careless with the women, these athletes aren’t stupid as the media make them out to be. I don’t think they’re going broke because of the children. I think they’re going broke because of those wicked financial representatives, who tend to deceive the smartest on many occasions, basically because these are young black males. But we tend to digress and focus on the black athletes lifestyles instead.

    • That’s because part of the lifestyle is caring more about getting stuff (women, cars, things, etc) than staying on top of your money. It’s much harder for a financial rep to deceive you when you’re paying attention than it is when you are not. If we can get our young men with money to focus on being wealthy and what to do with that wealth I’m hoping this conversation will be unnecessary in the future.

  17. When you have 78% black male athletes wounding up broke, something else is wrong that’s not being addressed. Having all those kids is no excuse either, but it’s hard not to have kids by multiple women when most of them are just as careless or even less careless than you are, especially if your a rich public figure. Just like the article indicates, it only takes one night.

Like I said, something else is wrong here, because black men, although they can be a little careless qit the women

  18. …if you can't feed your baby, then don't have a baby…- micheal / 1984.

  19. hes just a typical nigga.

  20. WOmen have the responsibility weather to sleep with them as well! IT FALLS ON BOTH OF THEM!

  21. 1) If you can't afford condoms, you can't afford children! 2) Income-based child support can be unrealistically punitive! What child eats $2,500 a month in food? Hell, I'm an adult male with bills, student loans, and rent…I don't even bring home THAT much. "Support" should be based on actual cost of living, not lifestyle! 3) It takes TWO people to create a child…I don't hear any condemnation of the mothers; I'm sure they knew what with whom they were dealing with and what the consequences could be! http://beyond-the-political-spectrum.blogspot.com/

    • Stop making excusing for these stupid ass men. No one held a gun to his head and made him have sex with her without a condom.

    • What ever has transpired in the past is elementary for what is important is that the kids are taken care of even If he has to wash dishes or flip burgers, of course If he is incarcerated then the state will have to step in, so what ever the original settlement may have to be modified one way or another, as the quotes says 'you cannot get blood out of a turnip, like it or not. Oh! the mothers also has to be responsible from day 1, everything that appears to be a plus at first glance is not a guarantee , get to know who you are being sexually involved with from the inside-out, instead of the outside-in.

    • Kathy Henry – Spoken like a true "feminist;" unyieldingly emotional and defensive, no critical thinking applied.

    • Dear Beyond The-Spectrum:

I cared for, paid for and did EVERYTHING for my beautiful, now 21-year-old son, ever since he was in my uterus. I requested child support when he became 13 because it takes soooo much more than just a meal to raise a child. When the checks came in, I used them EXCLUSIVELY for my child… and it still wasn't enough. I got $326.00 per month. His ACTUAL cost of living was about $1,400.00 per month (sometimes more counting summer camps, lacrosse and soccer uniforms and traveling costs for same, sneakers, T Shirts, Underwear, Movies, private tutoring (he needed extra help… got that cost from his daddy who also needed extra help when he was a kid (I didn't)) just to mention only a few of the myriad of other costs associated with raising him month-to-month). Talk about what you know fool!

    • Robert Brown , thank you. A lot of people always want to dump on the men. The woman should also sleep responsibly. Where is their accountability?
Dont's get me wrong Warren should be smarter, but so should the mothers

    • Kam Steele – This is not about women. Women do their job when it comes to the children and do take responsibility for their actions. If you are a man you are also responsible for what you do with your body and who you have sex with. If you do not think about the fact that having sex can make you a parent then you wind up like Warren Sapp with five, count 'em, FIVE baby mamas who you are expected to support. I think men believe that they are somehow not as responsible for children as women are, simply because they don't get pregnant. This is why we have so many children who have been deprived of something so vital to their development, namely, their fathers. It is time for it to stop, and it is time for men to stop blaming women for their own stupid and irresponsible behavior and make some changes.

  22. TMESS MAKES ME SICK! HIS ASS NEEDS TO PAY EVERY PENNY TO THOSE CHILDREN!

    • If you think making babies with someone is a oneway street, then you are as shallow as the other party. If the dad is broke and in jaIl by court order, ADC is the alternative. Maybe, the court should mediate a quid pro quo, something, for something solution-both ptys should be required to get training for rear life-sustaining careers.

  23. He needs a new job as a speaker/mentor to young men about condoms. SMH

  24. Durex condoms cost 6 dollars a box at Target. Child support is thousands of dollars per month.
