Detective Mike Cooper with the Columbia Police Department said the duo traveled to various Wal-Mart stores collecting refunds on fraudulent receipts.
On Thursday, however, the couple’s luck ran out. James Edward Jefferson and his girlfriend, Olivia Rochelle Howard, were arrested at the Columbia Walmart on multiple charges including felony shoplifting, felony conspiracy to shoplift and receipt fraud.
“[Howard] had a big grin on her face counting her cash and she said hello and I told her she was under arrest. It wiped the smile right off her face,” said Detective Mike Cooper of the Columbia Police Department.
After the couple was arrested, police found equipment the couple used to create the fraudulent receipts inside their Jeep.
“They had a mobile receipt station in their vehicle. They had laptop computers with wifi, copiers, and printers in the vehicle with them. They were actually printing their own receipts” says Cooper.
There were receipts found in the vehicle for stores as far away as Houston and New Orleans.
“This is costing you and I every time we walk into a store and buy something” Cooper added.
Cooper added that there may be additional charges forthcoming.
“We’re also going to get with the district attorneys office and see what all we can and can’t charge them with” he added.
