“Black Leaders” Step Forward with a Black Agenda for Obama: Is It Serious?

US News reported that a group of African American public figures spent four hours in a closed-door meeting and emerged with a “wish list” for President Barack Obama. The two being mentioned by the report are Urban League President Marc Morial and Rev. Al Sharpton, President of the National Action Network.   I suspect that NAACP President Ben Jealous was also part of the gathering as well.

The black agenda is an oft-debated issue and a magical list that many people have always believed to not exist.   When I think about the black agenda, I am reminded of that age-old question:  “If a tree falls in the woods and there’s no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?”

This analogy fits because there are many inside the Obama Administration and in the African American community who have long felt that black people simply don’t know what they want from President Barack Obama.  They claim that no clear agenda has ever been presented to the president and that our interests are as scattered as pebbles on a windy beach. But the truth is that there has ALWAYS been a black agenda.  The problem is that no one was listening.

Even worse, those individuals designated as overseers to the black community, namely Al Sharpton, didn’t use their access to President Obama to aggressively push a black agenda.  Instead of giving the black community’s agenda to the president, Sharpton’s job was to give Valerie Jarrett’s agenda to black people.  Valerie Jarrett, a Senior Adviser to President Barack Obama, is one of the key people that I hold most personally responsible for the out of control black unemployment problem in America.  For the untold suffering of millions of black men, women and children, this woman can never be forgiven.

I am pleased to see  that Morial and Sharpton have responded to calls for more direct action from President Obama.   Morial, as I’ve mentioned before, has appeared to be sincere and balanced in his approach to dealing with the White House.  I won’t say much else about NAACP President Ben Jealous and Rev. Al Sharpton.  But I also find myself disappointed in those who’ve spent more time seeking to discredit Obama critic Cornel West than actually talking about the issues that they know to be serious problems in our community.  These distractions are costly, for nothing is getting done while people waste their time wondering if West is just angry about inauguration tickets.

Morial was quoted in the article as saying that “It’s important for us to come together.”

I couldn’t agree more.   The first step toward coming together would be the insistence by Jealous and Morial that Rev. Jesse Jackson be brought to the table when addressing President Obama.   While some of us get distracted by Jackson’s mistakes of the past, I only see a man who has spent 40 years using his powerful voice to speak to the issues that affect black and brown people across America.  His 40 years of service should not be discounted just because we’re happy about the guy we’ve had in the White House since 2008.   It is possible to love Barack Obama, Cornel West, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson at the same time, and the idea of drawing lines in the sand is one that is fabricated by those who know that black people are most easily conquered when you disperse their leadership into competing factions.

Those who argue that there has been no black agenda were simply determined to close their ears and shut off our brains.  For four years, Rev. Jackson, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, Dr. Wilmer Leon and a chorus of others have consistently cited massive black unemployment, poverty, urban violence, mass incarceration and educational inequality as the leading concerns of the African American community.  The problem is that because these individuals were seeking substantive, rather than symbolic commitment from the Obama Administration, they were never given a platform like MSNBC to share their point of view.  Televised liberal politics is nothing more than propaganda at its best, not much better than the nonsense fed to black people on networks like BET.

It’s time for the games to be over.  Politics must take a back seat to substance, and real leaders must be given a chance to address real issues.  I don’t mind Al Sharpton being at the table for negotiation, since Obama seems to like him enough to let him speak.  But by choosing a small group of people and making them the primary conduit through which the needs of 40 million people are communicated, self-interest can become the ultimate bottleneck.

It’s time for the White House to start taking us seriously.

  3. This forum is the quiant-essential public debate about relevant issues & expressedd opinions. It should not be taken personal. Derrogatory attacks against Dr watkins, ,West,Mr Smiley and others is unhealty for all of us. We should all be gradified that the social media allows instant access to real time commentary. Being near 70 it is appauling that we can have such a powerful dialog. It is realtime and uncensored ffor he most part. Let us make the most of it while it last without being so accusatory.

  4. I agree with Dr. Watkins wholeheartedly. There is nothing wrong with supporting Obama AND demanding that he address the substantive issues affecting Black America, just as other minority groups do, i.e. Hispanic community in regards to immigration; gays and lesbians in regards to marriage equality; and women in regards to reproductive rights. It was OK to take Bush to task on issues, why not Obama too? There is something deeply wrong when black people are too scared to question any POLITICAL leader just because he is Black? Are we so weak mentally that we have resorted to that line of thinking?

  5. Valerie Jarrett may be responsible but she is nowhere near the most responsible for anything.
    IF there exists a global system of white domination, THEN, the people most responsible for the high rate of black people's paid* unemployment are those white people who perpetrate the unjust acts of that system—the shop keepers, human resource managers, bus drivers, etc…..
    *(A lot of us are employed in unpaid labor in prisons).

    President Barack Obama, multiple members of the Congressional Black Caucus, other elected black leaders at the State and Local branches of government, U.S Supreme Court Clarence Thomas, etc., etc., have contempt for the sworn oath of office, the Constitution, the rule of law, and the United States of America.

    There are truly possible and legal ways to acquire assets from the affluent, a business owner, other individuals, private and public entities who or that violate the Constitutional rights of U.S. citizens and legal immigrants, that could be used for the benefit of the disenfranchised, but this requires respect for the Constitution, the “oath of office”, the rule of law, and “tort practice expertise”

    ……qualities that the Harvard Graduate President Obama, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, multiple members of the Congressional Black Caucus, other elected black leaders at the State, County, and City jurisdictions of government, fail to uphold as mandated by law and sworn under oath as elected officials or public servants.

I understand not pushing it in POTUS first 4 years, but we really need to push it now…If Repubs get in in the next 4 years, we are back to Roots…I tried looking this up but could not find it…They didn't give much in on the TJMS.

    Past and present day elected black leaders, such as President Barack Obama, multiple members of the Congressional Black Caucus, other elected black leaders at the State, County, City jurisdictions of government, and our own “civil” black lawyers don’t step up to the plate for law abiding blacks on the lawful side of the law who are entitled to redress for wrongs by government.

    If this conference of influential black leaders doesn’t include holding President Barack Obama, other elected black leaders or other elected officials accountable to the oath of office, the U.S. Constitution, a respective State Constitution, the “Bill of Rights”, Constitutional protections, then the influential black leaders and other individuals in attendance are wasting his or her valuable time. Upholding the sworn under oath duty to uphold the Constitution, a respective State Constitution, the “Bill of Rights”, especially the U.S.C., 14th Amendment, etc., etc., is the essence of what it means to be an elected official or public servant.

  19. It is amazing how Blacks support these non-productive Black politicians. Was once told that Black politicians don't have to do anything for Blacks. Just having them in office is good enough. That is insane, and this thought is setting a bad example for our children. Our children are being taught to go into politics for their own benefit, and don't think about helping the Black people who voted for them. Obama is also a bad example for our children. Being an uncle tom is not the way to go. We need Black leaders/politicians like Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Fred Hampton Sr.

The reasons for massive unemployment in the Black Community is tied to the flaws and abuses of vulture capitalism, widespread mis-education and poverty, a lack of respect for education within our community (by many, not all), and a constantly shifting job market requiring an attitude of "life-time learning". Skills are only part of the equation, the other part is to embrace the idea of constantly upgrading your skills to meet the needs of the market place. The other piece is that somehow we have to convince the wealthy "job creators" to be more patriotic about keeping jobs here and paying people a decent living wage. Now, what part of this is Valerie Jarret's responsibility? And, the President can't do it alone. Do you recall the Jobs Bills he introduced? Have you objectively listened to his appeals to create new jobs in the green energy industry and his call to invest in education and training. Congress has to agree to work with him to achieve these goals and the radical right seems determined not to let this first Black President be successful even at the expense of the country and the economy. On one note I do hope the President will be more assertive in pushing his agenda for employment and he seems to have gotten off to a decent start. It's our job to "push him" and push Congress as well. Good luck in getting those racist ass Republicans to cooperate.

Now maybe he can promote a so-called "Black Agenda" which is basically, helping African Americans be free of discrimination and promoting the policies for economic equality for ALL Americans, but especially for those who have a foot on their neck (African Americans who wear the yoke of institutionalized marginalization and discrimination coupled with the crippling legacy of slavery). But it is a very complex phenomena that was not created in the last four years and certainly will take more than four years to address. When I mentioned the crippling effects of slavery on the nation, I was not only talking about its crippling effect on blacks. Its had one on whites, too. Gave them a false and skewed sense of entitlement that they did not and do not deserve. Unfortunately, while African Americans over whelming supported President Obama in the 2008 and 2012 Election the realization is that he doesn’t have to do anything to address the issues and concerns of African Americans. Perhaps it will not blemish his legacy but President Obama’s failure to address the issues and concerns of African Americans may be the cause of him being the only and last African American male that African Americans trust to elect as President. Why would any community want a President in office in which they cannot address their issues or concerns simply because the President is the same race? Furthermore, he will lose the respect and love of the African American community and be considered as Cain who slew his own brother. These so called African American leaders have done a great injustice to the African American community in its request to look away simply because our President is black. Should we look away when and if we should have a Caucasian, Hispanic, or any other race in office? I think not!

  40. President Obama owes a DEBT to Black America. Historically, politicians reward their supporters. Our president has named two women to the US Supreme Court, not one of which is black. One of his selections for the high court, never recruited any black people for tenure while she was Dean of Harvard Law School. Gays and Lesbians, unions, Hispanics , and Caucasians have been rewarded for their political support as it should be! What about Black PEOPLE? DO WE NOT DESERVE TO BE REPAID FOR OUR SUPPORT? Think about it.

    • Obama is following the same pattern of all of our so-called "Black Caucus". They get elected and they do NOTHING for Black folks. That is the way it has been for years. Until Black people make a stand, it will continue to be the same.

      We cannot call on these so-called Black leaders to make a stand. They sell out. Watch Al Sharpton. I think Al Sharpton has been commissioned by the establishment to "quiet down the cries of suffering Black people". Look at the Travon Martin case. Have you heard any loud cries from his parents? They were immediately quieted down by these so-called Black leaders.

      Past and present day elected black leaders, such as President Barack Obama, multiple members of the Congressional Black Caucus, other elected black leaders at the State, County, City jurisdictions of government, and our own “civil” black lawyers don’t step up to the plate for law abiding blacks on the lawful side of the law who are entitled to redress for wrongs by government.

      With all the criminal acts perpetrated against the law abiding U.S. born blacks by the criminal actions of police officers, other public servants, it just makes no sense that the black community continues to remain in poverty.
