What's Happening In Your World
Australia’s Foreign Minister Bob Carr has gotten international attention after telling the public exactly how he feels about recently-deceased leader Margaret Thatcher.  Carr says that Thatcher made  ”unabashedly racist” remarks the last time they met.  She warned him to “not let the immigrants” take over his country.   “I recall one conversation I had with her in her retirement where she said something that was unabashedly racist,” he said on ABC News.  ”She warned Australia – talking to me with Helena [his wife, who is of Malaysian origin] standing not far away – against Asian immigration, saying that if we allowed too much of it we’d see the natives of the land, the European settlers, overtaken by migrants. Carr, who has views that seem aligned with millions of Brits who are happy to see her go, continued to bash the late leader. “She said: ‘I like Sydney but you can’t allow the migrants’ – and in context she meant Asian migration – ‘to take over, otherwise you will end up like Fiji where the Indian migrants have taken over’.” Carr says that he respected Thatcher as a strong and bold leader, but had to admit that she was less than a full humanitarian.  There is also evidence that Thatcher supported the Apartheid regime in South Africa as well, although not everyone agrees on how she felt about it. Carr’s remarks have met with serious opposition at home and abroad, as he is now being accused of seeking to tarnish the memory of a woman who can no longer defend herself.. Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Julie Bishop said that Carr’s remarks are “a crude attempt to slur the reputation of one of the 20th century’s most outstanding leaders.’’
