Truth about the Rise and Demise of 3LW

BY: DANIEL PETERSON

Are you aware  of the saying “if you don’t fit, then you quit”? This exactly what these trio girls did.

Adrienne Bailon and Naturi Naughton may be regular fixtures on our television screens nowadays, but we familiarized with both girls while they were still in R&B trio 3LW—that also included Kiely Williams—who joined forces in 1999.

While the three have all progressed from their pop-star days, their wrangles were recently dug up when Naughton showed up on The Real (which Bailon co-hosts). The 33-year-old had visited to promote her successful Starz’s show ‘Power.’ And while at the show, Bailon publicly admitted that their old beef that had depleted.

But if you go deeper into their history, you’ll understand why they had to part ways.

2000:

Williams and Bailon, Naughton became popular in the early 2000s, and even went on tour alongside Nelly and Destiny’s Child. Their biggest hits were “Playa’s Gon’ Play” and “No More.” Their self-titled album sold 1.3 million copies in America. But things didn’t remain okay for the trio for too long.

2002:

There arose Rumors that Williams and Naughton didn’t get along, behind the screens. And soon after the group dropped their summer 2002 hit called “I Do (Wanna Get Close To You),” it was reported that Naughton had exited the group. Due to the escalating drama, 3LW’s second album, ‘A Girl Can Mack,’ was even put on hold.

It was because, Right before the album’s release, Naughton went on ‘The Wendy Williams Experience’ (Williams’ radio show before her TV show debut), and set the record straight.

While there, Naughton revealed that she got into an argument with Williams which ended with Williams “throwing, a hot plate of food, at me,” and that she was “forced to leave the group.”

2002-2007:

Bailon and Williams continued performing in 3LW even after Naughton’s dismissal from the group and eventually replaced Naughton with Jessica Benson. And After being approached by Disney, Williams and Bailon starred in the film ‘The Cheetah Girls’ with Sabrina Bryan and Raven-Symoné. The success of the soundtrack motivated Disney to turn the duo into a real-life singing group who maintained the success till around 2008.

During that time, Naughton went back to school and perfected in acting.

2009-now:

Naughton’s greatest first breakout role was playing Lil’ Kim in ‘Notorious’ followed by a role in the 1980 sequel  film, ‘Fame.’ She is now acting as the wife of James St. Patrick, on 50 Cent’s hit show ‘Power.’

After the disbandment of the 3LW and then ‘The Cheetah Girls,’ Bailon did several acting cameos, and she even had her own reality series alongside her friend Julissa on the now-defunct ‘Style Network.’ In 2013, Bailon became “The Real’s” daytime talk show co-host.

Williams went on to have a minor acting and singing career. In a 2012 interview, Williams said that she was writing music via her creative direction company to assist up-and-coming artists.

That how each of the trios have managed to make it in their own ways.
