It is worth to evaluate your words before you utter any statement to anybody. Please don’t wait until you find yourself in the situation like the one which this teacher found himself in—for you to realize this.
A middle school teacher in Apex, North Carolina was suspended after comparing his 13-year-old student to a slave.
The scenario, which was caught on a footage and shared via a Snapchat post, clearly shows an Apex teacher using a racial slur and also comparing 7th grader Dayon Warren to a slave in an Apex Middle School classroom.
Dayon Warren, later told the ‘ABC 11 Eyewitness News’ that the teacher was annoyed that he and another student started laughing at a child who was dancing. [Something] that made the teacher utter the statements below:
“Did I call you a n****?” the teacher, whose name is withheld by the school—can be heard saying. “No, I said kids are controlling you. That’s exactly what occurred to the slaves. Their owners controlled the slaves, you are letting him control you, and you are the one who is getting in trouble.”
Then the students in the footage can be heard laughing as their teacher belittled Warren. Warren told ABC 11 that the teacher could’ve chosen a much more fair way to pass his point across.
“I did not know what to say. He began calling me a slave,” Warren said. “He could’ve said it differently instead of using an analogy that I was his slave.”
After the incident, Warren’s mother removed her son from Apex school.
“This’s coming from a Caucasian man to a Black American student, and we are already living in a predominantly white community—a predominantly white school, so it really hurt my feelings for [him] to use those words,” Ayona Wilson (Warren’s mother) told CBS’ WNCN-TV.
“It is more hurtful than anything as I would never want my kids to expect that,” Warren’s mother said, adding that. “The teacher should clearly know what to say, and what not to say to the children. That teacher also had to know that some of the things he says could hurt people and that’s going to stick with my little son forever.”
The teacher was suspended following that incident.
The scenario is being investigated by the Wake County school district—according to a letter from the school which was obtained by the network.
