“I’m Already Working towards My Second College Degree at Just 18 Years.”

BY SUSAN JOHNES

Black students have a higher IQ than their white counterparts. Only regression would explain why black children born to high IQ, wealthy black parents have higher test scores.

A Howard University graduate Nkechinyere Chidi-Ogbolu has surprised the world. She is already working towards her second college degree at just 18 years old.

Last Weekend, Chidi-Ogbolu graduated from Howard with her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. That’s good news, isn’t it? But a more surprising one is that this fall, she’ll be beginning a doctoral program in biomedical engineering at the University of California-Davis.

Chidi-Ogbolu was raised in Nigeria. Due to her genius nature, she had skipped a fifth grade in the primary school she attended in her country.

After graduating from a British school system where the highest level of education was the 11th grade, Chidi-Ogbolu began Howards at 14 years old.

She told the university’s student publication ‘The Hilltop’ that it was a common trend for children in Nigeria to graduate high school at 16 years old. “I didn’t think graduating college at 18 was anything noteworthy,” she told the publication.

She added, “When everyone else said they were proud of me, I felt emotional to get recognition from a lot of people.

“I don’t find age to be a determinant of academic potential. I also didn’t find courses to be so involving that a college student couldn’t bear.

Her point was worth noting since, in the past few weeks, there have been some stories of exceptional high-school aged teenagers attaining college degrees within and beyond.

Chidi says her ultimate goal is to find cures for health ailments, especially those most likely to affect Nigerian citizens. “I want to help fix illnesses like Ebola and other principle or minor diseases,” she said.

The children of immigrants have shown exceptional achievements, especially in the field of academics at very elite institutions.

It is a fact that black immigrants to the United States have shown achievements that are superior to Native Americans.

Many scholars have come up with theories on the reasons for the differences in academic potential and had suggested that the people of color were just the most highly driven members of their home countries as evidenced by their willingness to migrate to a foreign country, hence the desire to work hard.
