Republican lawmakers who revered Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s trip to Cuba last week as “ignorant” and “insensitive” are probably eating their words right now. According to a source familiar with the couple’s trip, which was planned around their fifth-year wedding anniversary, was fully licensed by the United States Treasury Department. The longstanding U.S. trade embargo against Cuba prevents most Americans from traveling to the island without a license granted by the U.S. government; however, President Barack Obama’s administration eased restrictions on travel to Cuba for academic, religious or cultural programs.
Mauricio Claver-Carone, the D.C. director for the US-Cuba Democracy PAC, says that the two megastars have done a disservice to Cubans by not educating themselves on human rights issues taking place in the country before their recent visit. Mauricio’s group is working to fight for democracy in Cuba and tells TMZ that he’s upset about the nature of this visit.
Mauricio says that Cuban rights activists are upset about the couple’s decision to visit the country because ”There are women getting beaten on a daily basis, women who are being jailed for no reason … people are fighting for their freedom. It’s extremely insensitive.” Many people revered Mauricio’s comments as ill-informed and silly. Ramonda Gilmore, a commenter on this website, wrote: “True. But there are women getting beating daily, women fighting for their rights, women being jailed for no reason, and people fighting for their freedom here in America as well. Is Mauricio Claver-Carone upset about that?” James Bell, another commenter, supported the Carter’s as well: “It seems as though the commentors on this article think the Carters give a d*mn about what people think or feel.. It’s a race to BILLIONAIRE status by any means necessary.. Cuba is just another market to explore. As soon as Castro kicks the bucket, the country will open and be a BOOMING resort market.. The Carters are just getting ahead of the game..”
Do you believe the Republican lawmakers that challenged the trip should apologize to the Carter’s?
