Asa Lovechild: Rick Ross Rape Lyric Sparks Women’s Group Protest Outside Of Reebok

rickrossprotest48Rick Ross opposers took to the streets of New York to protest that rappers lyrics in the song “ You Ain’t Even Know” . It is believed and to most very obvious that his lyrics were referencing date rape, although the rapper denies it.  The lyric in question is, “Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.”Rick Ross issued a cowardly apology via his twitter account on Thursday. But women are not buying it.  One organization that is fighting back is the women’s rights group, Ultra Violet, who rallied outside of a Reebok flagship store in opposition.

The group is demanding that Reebok drop Rick Ross as their spokesperson. A statement made on Ultra Violet’s website by Nita Chaudhary read as follows:

“It’s time for Reebok to stop using their brand as a platform to dictate to women what counts as rape. Contrary to Ross’ claims, there was no misinterpretation here: Slipping a woman a drug and ‘enjoying that’ is rape, plain and simple,” says a statement on the company’s website by co-founder Nita Chaudhary. “It’s time for them to answer the 72,000 former customers who want them to stop promoting violence against women and fire Rick Ross.”

Attendee Wagatwe Wanjuki said, “As a survivor of campus rape, I know how harmful it is when sexual violence is not recognized for what it is: a violation of another human being. Reebok needs to take the responsible route and stand against the denial of the experiences of millions of rape victims around the world.”

Sonia Ossorio, the president of NOW NYC, who is in total support of Ultra Violet’s efforts ,said, “It’s unacceptable that Reebok, one of the oldest brands in athletics, would stand behind someone who so openly condones rape. Companies like Reebok have a responsibility to the public.”

Those in the hip-hop community are not remaining silent about the disturbing lyric. Talib Kweli has called the rapper’s apology “unacceptable” . Ross’s apology on twitter read, “I don’t condone rape. Apologies for the #lyric interpreted as rape. #BOSS.”

Okay I have to stop being formal in this blog and tell you straight. Rick Ross is a bold face liar. Anyone in their right mind who thinks that this man is even genuinely sorry for his lyric has got be plum crazy. His BS card got pulled and he is trying to save face by doing what he thinks is politically correct.  It does nothing  for those that have fell victim to rape in their past, who have to relive it over and over again, year after year, day after day. Rick Ross owes more than apology to the masses. Rick Ross needs to face the thousands of women who he has offended in a press conference and explain why he thinks that it is fashionable to go around poking fun at a serious crime such as date rape. Although many overcome the short term effects of rape, the mental effects of rape last a lifetime, which is something that Rick Ross clearly does not understand. It is time for Ross to man up and stop being a coward. Put down that gangsta persona and come correct.
