Magic Johnson Opens Up About His Son And Being Gay In The African American Community

EJ44Magic Johnson sat down exclusively with Harvey of TMZ to discuss his son, EJ and the subject of being gay in the African American community and  sports. Getting right to it, Johnson said that he knew his son was gay. Johnson said that he and his wife actually approached EJ about it at the age of 13 or 14. During that encounter he told EJ, “We just want you to love yourself and also make sure that you have all the information.”  He added, “That’s what I wanted to give him, just provide him with advice and guidance.”

Johnson told his son that he can always talk to him and his mom. Johnson says that at first EJ was torn about coming out, but Johnson credits TMZ for helping EJ. The basketball legend said that EJ may not have known how to come out. Of his son’s decision Johnson said, “I’m behind him a million percent”

Johnson also addressed the negative comments that have been burning up blogger pages, when the news broke about his son being gay. Johnson addressed the divide within the African American community about African Americans coming out.  Johnson said that in the African American community, religion and other traditions come into play when dealing with the gay phobia that plagues unification within the black community.  As one of the most active investors in the African American community, it does bother Johnson when anyone is discriminated against because they are gay. Johnson said, “This is 2013 and we should stop discriminating against people and support them.” He adds, “ I think this is going to be good for a lot of black young  people who want to come out.” “EJ is really going to help a lot of young people.”

Johnson finally touched on athletes eventually not being afraid to come out.  Harvey posed a question about Johnson’s own team, the L.A. Dodgers, and what he would do if one of his players wanted to come out. Johnson told Harvey, “As an owner you really have to support the person and then help educate the public.” He adds, “ If a player ever wants to talk to me whether he is on the team or not about coming out or about life, my door is always open.”

A Tale of Two Scandals: One Leads to Ruin and Another Creates a Champion of a Cause

  1. Come on every body. I knew when he was little that he was gay. You could see it and never had to think it. His family know it way before he knew he was gay. All of us just need to be happy that he had a understanding and loveable family. It is so much unhappiness in the world
it’s good to see someone live there life and is happy. To each it’s own as long as they are haapy and positive. I Love it.

  3. Lucrece Bazile-Fuller

Good deal Magic, for being a parent first, and no matter what road our children travel it's up to the parent to guide them with love !

  5. I am a Christian and believe strongly in the Word of God. However, I do not condemn anyone because only God can do that. I also have to admit that I just don’t understand Gays and Lesbians because I don’t find women appealing in that way, and that is probably the truth for most people. I am sure that they cannot understand my feelings either. I don’t expect them to understand or accept my lifestyle and don’t see why I have to accept what is not natural to me without being called names or having someone throw the Bible in my face and calling me a hyprocript.

Magic Johnson needs to back off the black community and remember that it’s his son and he will look bad if he doesn’t support him. If he felt otherwise, I doubt if he would say it.

  6. we quote the bible on a lot of things but we must remember that they gave us the bible. They did not want us to worship in thier churches. The first two people on the slave ship Jesus were Adam and Eve.Thats in the ships log.The bible has been translated into at least 123 languages. They changed and omitted many thing at the nicean conference when Constantine the so called great called them together to accept Roman Christianity. King James the 1st of England made his version. To say nothing about king Henry the V111 of England who broke away from Rome and formed the Anglecan church which is the Episcaple in America.40 Jews translated the bible at the library of Alexandria from Greek into Latin called the Septuagint, the old testament. The new testament was not written until about 300 years after the death of Jesus and he never wrote a line. There is no record of the parting of the Red Sea in Egptian history. There are no women permitted to be priests in the Roman Catholic church and yet women support them.I am saying all this to say that we have no real grounds to discreminate against gays or and one because the Europeans taught us to.Their hands are not clean it is stained with blood.Women were not permitted to vote until the 19th amendment to the US constitution. They teach us that men are better than women and we know that women compliments us.

  7. I can never understand why people make such a big thing about someone being so called gay. If they are gay and? Now if they wanted to make me gay then I could see me saying we are at war. Other than that this thing to me is a nothing issue.I think that if we are really advanced we have more really important things to deal with. After 2000 years what has the world learnrd.”The most civilized people are as near to barbarism as the most polished steel to rust.”What about the very best medical care for all without cost or the best education to the best of you ability without cost.Think about that.

  8. Love the person. Not the spirit that resides in the person…”with loving kindness have I drawn you”. Pray and ask God to take care of the rest.

  9. Love the person. Not the spirit that resides in the person…”with loving kindness have I drawn you”. Pray and ask God to take care of the rest.

  10. Pastor Dennis R. Williams Sr.

Homosexuals and lesbians need love as much as you do. They are not to be feared, not to be hated. Here’s the basic principle: We can’t sacrifice love for truth. The truth about anyone should never diminish our love for them. Even if they change the law and allow marriage between same sex couples as bad as that would be, we should not despise them. From me, as a follower of Jesus, they can expect to be treated with dignity.

As a Christian, I believe that God exists, and that God has something to say about healthy living and unhealthy living in his Word. With that in place, no homosexual or lesbian should expect me to agree with their lifestyle.

  11. I am a man I don’t care what people say about how being gay is OK. I am a man and I in no way is interested in having sex with another man and in no way I want my kids to be gay!

If one of my kids or family members became Gay I will love them however, there is no way I going to support it! I don’t want no part of it. Call me a hater all you want I don’t care!

  12. Magic Johnson supporting his son EJ’s decision to come out about his homosexuality was the right thing to do. I would not want any of may children to be gay or lesbian, but I would still love them and support them if they came out and told me they wrere. Many people in the U.S. and the world believe that marriage is between a man and a women. This doest’t mean that they hate gay/lesbian people or that they are homophobic. There are many people in the Black community who believe what is written in The Bible and HOly Quran about marriage. Both of these scriptures teach that marriage is between a man and a women. These peopele have the right to believe this and to express this with out being called haters. Everyone has the right to believe what they want and they ahve the right to express this. In the end God will judge who is right and who is wrong.

  13. Why is when black gays come out, they blame the black community. Magic Johnson say “In the African American community, religion and other traditions come into play when dealing with the gay phobia that plagues unification within the black community”. The white community have the same problem. If they didn’t, gays would be able to marry in all 50 states. So if Magic is proud of his gay son. When will Magic Johnson and Isaiah Thomas come out the closet.

  14. This man loves his son as you probably would love yours. All the hoopala about gay this, and gay that, means nothing, fact is if one believes in what the Bible says one should not indulge in the gay life, if you do, then either you do not believe what the Bible says or one does not care.

  15. This man loves his son as you probably would love yours. All the hoopala about gay this, and gay that, means nothing, fact is if one believes in what the Bible says one should not indulge in the gay life, if you do, then either you do not believe what the Bible says or one does not care.

  16. I do not think the issue is about Magic Johnson`s son being gay. That is a non issue and personal. The real issue is that he is Magic Johnson`s son. Magic`s fans expected Magic`s son to be athletic and great like his father and not a fat butter ball looking gay young man. This is the public`s reality….Our heroes and their families are held up to a higher public expectation. How do you think Magic Johnson really real about his being gay…….I am sure the brother is hurting inside….

  17. We always think that all societal ills are caused by Black Folk. Being homophobic is another example. When you specifically single out a particular group with a certain label, the implication is that they are solely responsible. Yes, there is a disagreement involving homosexuality in the Black Community, but we live in a society that is anti-homosexual.(homophobic)

I hate the usage of homophobia because of its perception. How does it make a person homophobic if they disagree with it. There are many who disagree with certain positions regarding Black Folks, does that make them “Blackaphobic”? It shouldn’t, as long as i am not denying anyone access or disrespecting homosexuals, it should not make me homophobic!!!

I respect Magic love and support of his child, but he should not just relegate his views exclusively to one group.

  18. Common on! Most people expected Magic’s son to be another athlete and some fat blob with horrible fashion style.

  19. It may be… like father like son.

  20. As a Christian, I understand fully what the scriptures say about homosexuality. It’s too bad people don’t read more of the Bible so they would see in Proverbs 6:6-19, that God revealed to His Servant, King solomon, that there are “seven things are an abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to miscief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”

God loves ALL of us and prays that we all will come to repentance. To single out homosexuals is hatred.

  21. REALLY people??? Im not at the slightest gay BUT, I have a problem with people who judge!!!!! Who the F%&# are we to judge???? None of us will have to stand before God for the sins of anyone else besides yourself..

  22. Ja'Neisha Hunter

This is sick! Just because you don’t agree with a person’s lifestyle doesnt mean you are homophobic. Most “black” people are against it because in the scriptures God is clearly against it. My people keep up the good work and don’t let the world tell you whats right and whats wrong.
