Beast of the Southern Wild’s, Quvenzhane Wallis, sat down with Academy Award winning actress, Marlee Matlin. Matlin’s record, as the youngest person to receive an Academy Award could be broken this Sunday by Wallis, who is up for Best Actress. She has obviously already broken the record of being the youngest actress to be nominated. Wallis played the role of Hushpuppy in the film, a young girl who struggles to hang on to her father and community, after it is devastated by a Hurricane. Beast of the Southern Wild was Wallis’s first film and her first acting project.
When asked what she would say, if she wins the award, Wallis said she would say “ thank you G-d,thank you for who gave me this and ,thanks for all the people who were before me.” The young starlet is already more prepared for the win, than Matlin was, in 1986. Of that time Matlin said, “I was 21 years old. I didn’t know what to expect.” “I remember very clearly that my heart was beating out of my chest.”
During the interview, Matlin praised Wallis for her performance saying, “Her work was amazing. Very raw. Very natural, and I was mesmerized by her performance.” She added, “In my eyes you’re a winner.” Matlin became the youngest actress to win the Best Actress Award for her part in Children of a Lessor G-d. Her work in the film resulted in a Golden Globe win for the actress. Also up for Best Actress is, Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings, Emmanuelle Riva for Amour, and Naomi Watts for The Impossible.
The Academy Awards airs on Sunday, February 24th at 7pm ET, on ABC.
