Nelson Mandela is having quite a media rejuvenation. Coming quickly after the announcement of an upcoming reality show that would feature him and his family, a biopic titled “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom”, has been green lit by the Weinstein Company. The Weinstein Company has a reputation for releasing films that go on to be Oscar awards contenders. Some of these winning films include recent releases such as, “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook”.
Idris Elba has been tapped to play Mandela. Harvey Weinstein had this to say about the acquisition, “I am extremely passionate about ‘Long Walk to Freedom.’ (Producer) Anant Singh first gave the book to me when the first edition came out. We have been talking about making this film since 1999. There have been a number of stop and goes, but sometimes things work out for a reason, and Anant Singh has done a masterful job in producing this epic story of our times.”
Shooting has already been completed and the film is set to be released during 2013. Mandela has rained praise upon producer Anant Singh and had this to say, “Singh is a producer I respect very much. Given the resources and backing, he will produce a work of the highest standards and excellence, and it is for that reason, I opted for him.” All early signs are showing that Mandela’s story will definitely be building a buzz and may be featured in next year’s Oscars. I’m interested to see how Elba will choose to portray the former South African President.
