1) What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Dr. Dameon V. Alexander. I am the Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives in the department of Academic Technologies at The George Washington University (GW) in Washington, D.C. I am also a Professor of Sociology at both GW and Georgetown University where I teach economic sociology, research methods, education and society, and other sociological disciplines.
I am also the Founder and Managing Partner of Counter Current Consulting, an education focused consulting practice that serves the needs of education leaders in schools and universities in academic technology, professional development, project/program management, research, and strategic planning.
2) What is your educational background?
I earn a BA in Electronic Media and Business Administration and a M. Ed. from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. I completed my Doctorate at the University of Cambridge, as a member of Darwin College in the United Kingdom.
3) What are some hurdles you overcame to get to where you are today?
There are too many hurdles I have leaped over to mention online. But, like some others, a single mother raised me. More recently, my wife and I conquered the streets of England. We were literally homeless for a short while when I studied at Cambridge. The challenge has been to mature as a husband, father, and professional scholar, while simultaneously being a “live” case study that any sociologist would love to explore in an empirical study. The hurdles made me, and I am still running and jumping.
4) If you had any advice for young people wishing to follow in your footsteps, what would it be?
Younger people should not be fooled by the illusion of efficiency and expediency of this high-tech globalized age. None of us are entitled to any form of success, we have to earn it and many times that means exercising patience and enduring tough situations. Seek wisdom first.
5) What are your plans and goals for the short and long-term future? Are you working on anything you’d like our audience to know about?
I published my first academic book entitled The Imprint of Business Norms on American Education in 2011. I will publish additional academic works as well as literary pieces for the popular audience.
I am currently the Chairman of AGlobali, a start-up social science research firm and education provider. Our goal is to enhance social and economic conditions of disadvantaged communities worldwide through education and research. We are targeting nations in Africa in the first instance. We are actively seeking investors.
6) Is there anything else you’d like to share with our Your Black World audience?
I am the great grandson of the late Reverend Whitfield Nottage, one of the pioneering “Nottage Brothers” who were dynamic evangelists during the early 1900s. I am also the nephew of the late civil rights activist and former Secretary of The State of Pennsylvania, Dr. C. Delores Tucker. Following in the tradition of my family’s legacy, I enjoy working on projects centered on domestic and transnational socio-economic disparities.
