  1. Good article. However, males experience depression at the same rate as females and are much less likely to seek the needed he help. The emotional pain and feelings of shame and guilt have taken its toll on African Americans. Well-meaning folk have chided depressed persons for “not having enough faith” or not being able to “look on the bright side”. The chemical imbalance that causes major depression cannot be overcome by “thinking positive”. Medical treatment is needed just as it is indicated for diabetes. We need to become educated about mental health issues so we can help each other. Acknowledging the issues is a sign of strength, not of weakness.
