Derrick Rose Is Choosing Fatherhood Over Basketball Right Now, and He’s Making No Apologies

Derrick Rose gave a candid interview to USA Today this morning where he discussed basketball and his new role as full time father. derrick roseRose has been out since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last April, and he’s apparently in no rush to the court. Rose is taking the necessary time to heal and enjoying being a father during his down time.

Rose’s manager, Gar Forman, told USA Today that he would like to get an exact date for Rose’s return, but Rose only says that he’ll be back once he’s at 110 percent.

What’s capturing Rose’s attention while he’s off the court? Fatherhood. The new dad is determined to be a great dad to his kid:

“Growing up without my dad being around, it’s definitely going to help me to raise him. If I just do everything the opposite of what my dad did, I think that will make things pretty easy.”

“I can joke about it now because I’m past that stage where it used to hurt. By having a kid, it’s gone. I could take all that negative energy that I had and put it in a positive way.”

Rose has always been a family man, and has used his basketball career to take care of his family.

” My whole life has been nothing but trying to find a way to take care of my mom and take care of my family as quickly as possible” he says.

Rose also has some poignant words about what he’ll teach his son.

“I’ll always teach him to be humble. Appreciate everything he has. The value of a dollar. Respect his elders. He’s going to be a cool little dude. He is, man. Being around [his mother’s] family. They’re cool people. This whole experience is going to be great. He’s going to have a great group around him” said Rose.
