Seventeen year old Tyrone Lawson was shot and k!lled after a fight broke out at the end of a high school basketball game at Chicago State University.
The argument erupted in a handshake line after the game between Simeon Career Academy and Morgan Park High School, according to police, but it didn’t end there. It continued in the parking lot of the gymnasium, where someone pulled out a gun and shot Lawson.
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, university police were on the lookout for a Jeep. Once the Jeep was located, two people were taken into police custody.
It is still unknown what the fight was actually about since nothing out of the ordinary happened during the game.
According to Lawson’s aunt, he was an honor student at Morgan Park High School and was six weeks away from his 18th birthday.
The university released a statement after the incident saying it was “deeply saddened by the tragic shooting death.”
“Additional security is provided by the university and all external partners during high school sporting events. Arrests have been made and university officials are awaiting the outcome of a full investigation to learn details about the shooting incident.”
Lawson was pronounced dead by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
