Did you know that Idris Elba was one of the leading candidates to play the star of the Quentin Tarantino film, “Django Unchained?” Tarantino says, however, that Elba was never considered for the part, largely because he is a British actor and this is an American story. In an interview with the UK Sun , Tarantino explains why Elba wouldn’t have been right for the role. “Yeah, Idris is British and this is an American story. I think a problem with a lot of movies that deal with this issue is they cast British actors to play the Southerners and it goes a long way to distancing the movie. They put on their gargoyle masks and they do their phoney accents and you are not telling an American story any more. They are just making hay of it, whether it be James Mason in Mandingo or Michael Caine in Hurry Sundown, they get British actors to do this.” Elba has played prominent American characters in the past, namely Stringer Bell in the hit series, “The Wire.” Few people watching the show even knew that he was British, since his American accent was so good. But this wasn’t enough for Tarantino, who felt that a black American should play the role. Tarantino also says that he is not normally all that interested in doing historical films. “I am not down with most historical movies, or biopics for that matter. My producer calls most slave movies cod liver oil movies — they’re good for you, but you don’t enjoy them,” he said. Tarantino’s comments link to the controversy that his new film has inspired. While some people are glad that Americans are forced to confront the horrors of slavery, there are others who feel that the film was over the top with violence. But maybe some of those critics would rather pretend that the violence during slavery never happened at all. Other characters that Tarantino considered for the role were Chris Tucker , Terrence Howard , Michael K. Williams , and Tyrese . So, stop for a second and picture their faces in the role that was played by Jamie Foxx: Tucker would be a bit too funny, not many people know much about Michael K. Williams, Tyrese isn’t a good enough actor. But Idris would probably have been the best. But that’s our opinion. What do you think?
