A state judge has ruled that the state of Texas can legally withhold funding to Planned Parenthood, which leaves millions of women’s groups outraged because their members are going to have to go to other doctors to get standard healthcare taken care of. Judge Gary Harger argued that qualified doctors and clinics can have all of their funding cut if they advocate for abortion rights.
Texas is not new to the ban on state-funded abortion. But what makes this case unique is that the state is no longer going to reimburse Planned Parenthood clinics for their basic healthcare services. Planned Parenthood provides preventative care for 48,000 poor women in the state of Texas.
Planned Parenthood will continue with their lawsuit against the measure, but the ban will begin this week.
