Real Housewives of Atlanta fire starter NeNe Leakes graces the current cover of Ebony, —bathing in what appears to be a tub of diamonds—and people aren’t happy about it. NeNe Leakes covers the December, 2012 issue of Ebony Magazine for the annual “Money and Power” issue, but does the reality starlet deserve to be a part of the Power 100? Well many reader do not think so and so the backlash begins. Ebony’s Power 100 list ranks all the most influential African American women of the year, and featured Leakes on the list was enough to get some back lash but placing the Real Housewife on the cover of the mag has some people up in arms. In the comments section of the popular gossip website Young, Back & Fabulous—where the first image of the cover surfaced—a trove of harsh criticism has appeared. [” Ebony Magazine has lost any credibility that it once had,” ] one comment said, while another simply asked, [ “Ebony couldn’t get ANYONE else on the cover???” ] Another comment even called the 45-year-old new grandmother a [“Donkey with Diamonds.” ] Here is just another example of internet posting about this issue: [ “I can’t believe that Ebony wants to suggest to our young people that NeNe Leakes’ path is a path they should consider to be successful. Let’s see…. strip club dancer because you were an unwed mother…. gold digger because your sugar daddy aged husband pulled you out of that lifestyle….no regular job because you did not see that as viable for you, hence, you preferred strip clubs and old men. These women who “keep it real” are really women who take the low road. You don’t have to live like that because there are other options. They might not yield you a designer purse or shoes but they will leave you with your dignity in the end. Ebony has lost all props from me. You have taken the likes of NeNe and placed her in the company of past covers who really deserved it…i.e. Mae Jimmerson, Shirley Chisolm, Maxine Waters, Oprah Winfrey, Colin Powell, Rosa Parks, etc. People who made a difference. Now if they wanted NeNe on a cover, it should have been one of the generic ones but not this one! How stupid !” ] Has Ebony lost credibility? Is this just a sign of the times? Has Ebony succumbed to poplar culture, doing whatever to sell magazines? One thing we can all agree on is that NeNe Leakes is a lighting rod for controversy and will likely sell magazines, which is the goal of any magazine. So tell me what you think.
