In America, there is a rush to lock people away in cages, evidenced by the prison population in this country. America has 5 percent of the world’s population and 25 percent of the world’s prisoner’s, and it’s not getting any better.
Driven by an ever-escalating “war on drugs,” the number of federal prisoners incarcerated in the United States has increased by ten times in just 30 years—27 times faster than the rate of population growth. According to a report released by the Urban Institute, the federal prison population stands at about 218,000 and is adding nearly 10,000 prisoners every year.
And this is the land of the free?
