Report: Jovan Belcher Killed His Girlfriend After Questioning Who Fathered His Daughter

The mother of Jovan Belcher, the Kansas City Chiefs player who killed his girlfriend and then himself, allegedly said that her son committed the murder after arguing with his girlfriend about the paternity of his daughter.  This was according to Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd.  During interviews about the incident, Shepherd said that the couple was fighting over who fathered their three-month old daughter, Zoey.

“The mother believed that there was an issue over whether [Belcher] was the father,” said a source close to the Chiefs with knowledge of the situation.

“She said he [believed he] wasn’t necessarily the father of the child.”

Police are not sure if this is the reason that Belcher committed the murder.  But a source told the New York Post that this was likely the reason for the argument.

“But the implication was that [paternity] was what the two of them were fighting about — that the baby might not have been his,” a source said.

Belcher shot Perkins at 7:50 am, and then headed to Arrowhead Stadium where the Chiefs play, and shot himself in the car.   Zoey is set to receive a $1 million dollar payment over the next 18 years to take care of her after the deaths of her parents.  But NFL Players Union spokesman George Atallah would not comment on whether or not the payments are contingent upon the results of a paternity test.

The couple had a difficult relationship and were receiving counseling for their troubles.  Perkins had moved out and lived with friends for a while, but then moved back in with Belcher.   The baby is now with Belcher’s mother.
