OWN has approved two series from Tyler Perry’s production company, drama The Haves and the Have Nots and comedy Love Thy Neighbor, both of which will be written, directed, and executive produced by Tyler Perry.
For Perry, who is best known for his series House of Payne, movies starring Madea, as well as films such as Why Did I Get Married, this marks the first time that he will produce a drama series.
The Haves And The Have Nots is reportedly about a wealthy family and the impoverished family of their housekeeper, and the problems and secrets that arise within both families. Love Thy Neighbor is set at Love’s Diner, where every day the menu serves up great food, great laughs, life lessons, and a whole lot of love for its neighbors.
For OWN this is a big leap considering that it is the first time the network has created a scripted show. Initially OWN was struggling, but when Oprah Winfrey came back with Oprah’s Next Chapter, the network began to pick up steam. It has been gaining viewers ever since, quieting some of the critics who were predicting the network’s demise.
