Will South Carolina’s Governor Appoint Senate’s First African American Tea Party Republican?

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) has announced that he is leaving the Senate for a payoff  at the conservative Heritage Foundation. For South Carolina conservatives, this raises the question of who will replace DeMint, since the Senator  has announced that he will begin his new job on January 1st.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, an Indian American, has a unique opportunity to appoint an African-American to the seat. Many see this as an opportunity to add diversity to a Party which desperately needs to reach out to minority voters.
