Curtis Jackson, known to many as 50 Cent, addressed an audience of reporters on Thursday night with ease. The former boxer, turned rapper, turned megapreneur, answered questions for hours, at a boxing gym on Los Angeles. Jackson wants to see his longtime friend, Floyd Mayweather, go up against Manny Pacquiao. Jackson started making moves to get the fight underway over a year ago.
With his gift of gab and his business sense, he just might pull it off. In past relations, Jackson and Mayweather were set to start their own promotions company called TMT Promotions, but Mayweather did not want to invest. So Jackson went solo and started SMS Promotions, signing former featherweight and super featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa to a promotional deal. He wasted no time working out arrangements with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum to get Gamboa onto Saturday’s Pacquiao and Marquez show down.
The only thing that could stop the Mayweather and Pacquiao fight from happening is money. Mayweather offered a $40 million dollar purse to Pacquiao. It would be the highest purse of Pacquiao’s career, but is a rather low purse for a fight of this caliber.
Jackson says, “Having to pay that kind of money really irritates Floyd. He feels that when someone is making more money than they ever made, they shouldn’t be asking for more. He feels like he’s the star and he should be making the money and they should be thanking him for what he’s willing to pay them.”
This fight could be the one that sets Jackson apart from the rest of the promoters in the game. Is he the next Don King of boxing? We will have to wait and see.
