This week was another historic moment for the legendary singer/musician, Nona Hendryx (Labelle). London’s , Jools Holland invited the icon to do the last taping of Later with Jools in the BBC studios. The taping is the last to be done in the historic building, as the BBC has been sold, but the show itself will continue tape elsewhere.
The British Broadcasting Corporation has been around for more than 50 years and Later with Jools Holland has been taping there since 1992. Hendryx, was joined by Holland on piano, and her band which included, yours truly on background vocals, Ronnie Drayton, KiKi Hawkins, Trevor Gale, and Warren McRae.
The feeling in the studio, was that of sadness, as well as a feel good party, that you did not want to end. Hendryx performance, included songs from her new album, Mutatis Mutandis. Other’s performing on the show were Lana Del Ray, Palma Violets ,The WeekND, Tift Merritt, new comer Tom Odell and the magnificent, Soul II Soul.
For me, to be around seasoned singers like my mentor and second mother, Nona Hendryx, Jools Holland, Jazzie B, and Caron Wheeler, was an indescribable moment that I will never forget.I ride on the backs of some truly extraordinary mentors, that have taught me the meaning of being an artist, living in the moment and just letting the music breath. To walk into the same building that has been the home of so many iconic performances was an honor. I have the best seat in the house! You can catch Nona’s electrifying performance again, tonight on the BBC and online.
