Soul Food Series Actress Vanessa Williams Takes Center Stage

Been wondering whatever happened to Vanessa  Williams, after the Soul Food series ? She went back to her theatre roots. Williams is starring in The Pasadena Playhouse production of  Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel.  Williams plays the lead role of Esther Mills. The role was first made famous by Viola Davis in 2004.

Set in 1905, New York City, Esther is a middle aged seamstress who taught herself how to sew. She gets involved with a handsome Caribbean man named George who writes her love letters. Esther is head over hills for George, but she also loves another man who is in the same town as her. Mr. Marks is a Hasidic shopkeeper and  there are tense racial boundaries that are keeping them apart.

You may also recognize another familiar face in this production, as Dawnn Lewis (A Different World) plays the role of Mrs. Dixon. Dixon is a business owner who is very protective of Esther. The production is directed by Sheldon Epps (Sister Sister, Friends, Girlfriends). African American theatre at it’s finest. The show is running now until Dec.2nd .
