Controversy is hitting the fan as JC Penny put out a Father’s Day ad featuring a gay couple. The ad features the terms “First Pals,” and shows an all-male couple playing with their children. The copy on the ad says : First Pals: What makes Dad so cool? He’s the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver — all rolled into one. Or two. The ad relates to the company’s public decision to stand with the LGBT community in their fight for equal rights, marital rights, etc. JC Penny has been challenged by the group “One Million Moms” in the past for bringing on an openly gay spokesperson, Ellen DeGeneres. Defending its decision, JC Penny said this about the ad and their use Ellen as a spokesperson: “Ellen represents the values of our company” — and with this kind of pro-equality advertising, JCPenney is continuing to reinforce its progressive values.
